AAAAHHHH It's American......

which isn't my area of expertise.
I realise there's a premium on this but could some knowledgable soul tell me the approximate premium amount ( either in $ or % ).

"Ex: Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection (Bowers and Merena, 4/97), lot 1882, which realized $4,180.(#6163)
Greysheet wholesale bid is $6100 for an average example with no premium for the pedigree."
Thus, he is saying that it sold at auction in 1997 for $4,180 and the current dealer wholesale bid for a MS65 example is $6100.
Additionally it appears to be a nice example:
I'm a bit 'iffy' about dealers claims when it comes to high priced items.
For all I know these coins could retail at $ 2000 without the 'name' premium......you get my point.
OK - time for a bit of financial juggling I think.
He sells high-end toned coins usually (at large mark-ups).

Yes, that's why I mentioned the auction and wholesale bid info. It wouldn't hurt to check the Heritage site for similar sales; although, from the info in your sig line, I'm guessing that you like the fact that it's ex-Eliasberg. It's also an Overton-102 (I'm not sure if this variety brings a premium - you might want to ask on the US Coin Forum).
Me too, here's the one from my collection:

As to pricing, check Heritage's auction archives. Of course, that was then and this is now.
Another question to ponder is; would it cross to PCGS? Do you care? But, ultimately, what is the market price now? I do not know.
I just wish I had my fully frosty 1832 Busty with the thin crescent partial rainbow.......a real AU58 which no doubt rests in an MS63/64 holder today.....
Everytime I hear about these Overton varieties, it reminds me of that sad story with LM, you know which one I'm referring to, right?

Why's that Mac? Were the standards that tighter back then?

However after careful consideration I have decided not to purchase it due to the fact that I will keep some cash on hand for 'remarkable' ZARs ( such as the double shaft variety coins etc ).
Also I will stick to Eliasberg gold. I like Ron Guths story in Coin Collecting for Dummies ( yes, have a chuckle ) which goes along the lines of him buying a few Thalers and then finding different mintmarks & die varieties and purchasing all those too !!! His set still isn't complete because he can't find a certain year. So the moral is to stick to the knitting.
Yes, a holey coin as I recall, but a rare one.
Sad, ain't it? "Market grading" means your Au58's of old are now MS63 or better.
My favorite bust half was deemed AU53 by PCGS, but I thought it slightly nicer.

I realize this post has been superceded by another, and I also realize that I should probably just keep quiet...but that's not me...I find that I must ask: Would a serious, thinking person post that they’re considering the purchase of a $6,500 coin while making the statement quoted above.? Maybe you're not "GCL,"but you're certainly just as full of crap. Give me a break. - Preussen
Good Luck.
Actually Preussen, you've Peed me off somewhat. That line had nothing to do with the posts before it. I was simply trying to imply that 'name' coins often carry a large premium on Ebay which is especially true of Eliasberg Gold. I know nothing about American coins ( nor the vendor ) so I was simply making a point that for all i knew ( before doing my research ) that these coins could go for way cheaper without the name premium. I wanted to check facts before I would have bought. Now just because you woke up on the wrong side of bed go and annoy someone else.

Well, that certainly explains your spouting off about "seriously considering" the purchase of a $6500 coin that might only be worth $2000 without the "name premium." I'm sorry I ever doubted you. My apologies to you and the other members of this august forum.
Edit: and if you doubt that I don't buy 'expensive' coins then look at my Ebay in a few weeks time. I'll provide the link later.

No, my friend; I guess I just don't get it. Enjoy your hobby. - Preussen

There's a message on the thread for you.

Thanks for spoiling what was otherwise an enjoyable night.
<< <i>Preussen - I don't care. I am relative new to coin collecting and know absolutely nothing about American coins ( not my area at all ). I was only asking for honest advice as I'm trying to learn.
Good Luck.

Only a real "class act" would edit their post to include such drivel after I replied to it. My assessment of you stands. Learn from it or get over it. Better yet, buy the coin ... now wouldn't that show me? - Preussen
Edited to add: I'm finished with this...the last word is yours
