novice question about coin market

I am not sure if this is a stupid question, but i thought i would give it a shot. I have been reading a book about coins and it mentions different peaks and valleys in the coin market at different times. Like when coins were really inflated at certain times and others where there was lest interest and prices were cheap. Anyway, not sure if this can be answered. But, what is the market like right now. Are prices up so it would be good to sell past coins and not good to buy new or is it the other way around where you want to buy. Or, is everything just about average and it really doesnt matter. Any summary of the currect coin market would be greatly appriciated.

I'd be cautious on what you buy now. Although you will get much debate on the subject, my own personal feeling is that prices have now increased to a level that you need to know what you are doing..... profit can certainly be made yet, but............. use caution and knowledge.

So depends on your own experience level. If one is new to the hobby..... !

As far as investments go......what tincup said. Here is another idea. Why not collect the very best in a series that you are interested in and not worry about the resale? Join your local coin club and talk coins til you're blue in the face. Go to coin shows (big and small), meet other people like yourself. I think that in the end, after a lifetime of collecting and learning, you will be pleased with the results.

Thats my take on it anyway

It's getting to be a pretty old bull market but indications seem to be that it's going to get a lot older.

High point in the bull market potentially.....

Gold is a driving factor in some of this, so keep an eye on the metals every day.....

Purchase what you like at reasonable price levels for your budget and don't be overly concerned with the long term market.....

  • i collect what i like and dont let prices bother me.

it does seem that there is a dearth of nice material that im looking for.

take 1857 for example,if its not a Flying Eagle cent you are really gonna have to dig !

We appear to be nearing a top, but who knows where the top is?

What type of coins are you interested in? And at what grades/pricing levels?

If you are looking to sell, the market is hot now. Will it be worth more if you wait? Maybe. No one knows when the market will peak so if you need the money, now is not a bad time. If you are looking to buy, then don't look at this as an investment unless you can afford to live if the prices drop tomorrow.
