Anyone going to the open house at Smythe on March 6th? Free booze!

LongacreLongacre Posts: 16,717 ✭✭✭
I saw an ad in CW that Smythe was having some form of open house on Monday, March 6th, in advance of their auction sale that I believe starts on March 7th. The ad even said that free booze is available! Is anyone going or know anything about it?

Yes, I'll be there. Of course.

This is Smythe's "Trade & Graze". Free grub and wine, and you can bring your coins to the party. In other words, we won't kick anyone out for buying and selling with each other. In fact, we encourage it.

Naturally, our auction lots will also be available for viewing all day.

Where is it going to be held? In the Los Angeles area?

Are they trying to get the bidders drunk so they overbid?

I received the catalogue the other day and it looks like there are a few little goodies in it.

Wished I was closer to NYC so I could stop in.

Just be sure you don't spill any wine or food on the auction lots when you are viewing them. I don't think
they would be too happy about that. image

Not a bad idea! Unfortunately, the auction is the next day.

Wow, what a business plan! I'm surprised no one has thought of this before now.

Hungover bidders may be less agressive in their bidding so this may not be such a good idea after all.

Maybe so, but you could serve it just before the auction.

Maybe so, but bids made by bidders who were served alcohol by the auctioneer prior to the auction most likely would be found to not be legally binding if the bidder refused to pay.

Abe Kosoff in his book "Abe Kosoff Remembers" told the story
of someone who was drunk who wandered into one of his auctions from a bar in a hotel. The guy bought several lots but refused to
pay, Kosoff hounded the guy for several months and then just
gave up. Turned out the guy was not a collector and was so drunk
he had no idea what he was doing when raising his hand.
