I agree with Wybrit, at his age I don't want to upset him!

  • Could some on please provide a little extra info on these Pennies.

ie: Are there any 'rare' dates etc ?

Is there a huge variation in price amongst the years ?

Are the any error coins in the series etc ?

I'd appreciate any help ( as I found google useless ).
  • $1 per coin seems ok. Nice coin.

the series runs from 1923 to 1960 inclusive.

the key to the series are the '27 and '28, with semi-keys being the '32, '33, '24, '30 and '29

errors I don't know anything about (errors do nothing for me).

varieties - the major varieties are the mintages that don't have a star following the date (in all cases there are coins with the star and w/o the star for the years listed) - '33, '40, '42 and '48.

Most of the modern coins are listed in Krause for $2 to $5 apiece, but I can usually pick them up online and at shows for $1 or $1.50 each. It's not until you get back around the start of the series that they get expensive.

    Design notes:

there are 2 designs with George V - one in full mufti (crown, robe, etc) and one with just the bust. The design with the crown has the word Penny spelled out on the reverse, while the bust design has the '1D' value on the reverse.

there are 3 issues with George VI - first is again the coronation design (crown, robe, etc), the second is a bust only and the third (two years of issue only) they swapped the words South Africa/Suid Afrika to Suid Afrika/South Africa (the English used to be on the left of the coin and was swapped to the right).

The final design in the series is Elizebeth II. There were no major design changes for the 8 years that these were minted.

Other design notes - the Georges are facing left while Elizabeth faces right.
Proofs are available continuosly from 1943 to 1960 and sporadically for the years before that.

that should be enough for now - I'll add more as I think of more.
