Is PCGS missing an opportunity in the "World Series"?

RegistryCoinRegistryCoin Posts: 5,117 ✭✭✭✭
I sure would like to see the progress of the participants in the World Series of Coin Grading. I believe that PCGS should allow non-participants/club members to view the leader-board. Who knows, maybe this would entice me to join in the fun, and their club... I think somebody is missing the boat here. Perhaps someone can clue me in, as to the reason for the exclusivity.

  • I am a member of PCGS and a participant in the contest...

That being said as part of the contest the population of coins is shown, which is a paid member feature only.

Also, the portfolios are named by the contestants which may or may not be the owners username, so it would not benefit most to view the actual names of these portfolios as they won't necessarily know who is in the contest.

I don't know if they are being exclusive, but I hope this helps.

Thank you for your answer, MarineEAS1999. I understand the "user name" part, however, pops are easily garnered by anybody, with a quick look at the registry sets for a particular series, which offer pops. Also, a simple requirement or recommendation that an anonymous name be used for registration in the WS, if so desired.

Hi Goose3. Wouldn't PCGS get mo' money if someone like me is enticed to join in the fun by showing the leader-board? Also, a part of the rules of the WS could state that the top five or ten sets, or so, will be shown, so pick a WS user name accordingly. And, isn't part of the fun ego-related? Wouldn't the participants enjoy seeing their name available to a larger audience? Without the exclusivity, the WS would get more ink on the forums, as well.

probably so but someone there doesn't see it that way.

Yes, Goose3, but I think that person was left at the dock.
  • I think anytime you can involve those that arent members in a manner that shows actual benefit to the membership itself, aside from any free grading you may get, you have the potential for something big. If non-members were allowed to participate, but not able to win prizes, the numbers would surely rise. This would provide not only entertainment, but would also provide an 'outsider' the actual experience of the things that are done for the members as appreciation. Plus, you will have some that might do well in it and think to themselves "Crap, if I had been a member I possibly could have won some money". Now, some might say they dont want that type of attention, and maybe that possibility alone could be the reason it is done as it is. Any way you look at it, I think the bus wasnt only missed, it was re-routed. I think a HUGE potential for future business could be gained in these types of situations, but it has to be acknowledged and addressed properly for that to happen.

Then on the 'other side of the coin' some would say that the World Series is a membership privelidge and outsiders shouldnt get the same benefit for nothing, as it could cheapen the meaning it has for existing members. Both sides have valid points, all of which must be pondered before making final decisions. If enough people said they would bail on long standing memberships, maybe the sense of loyalty meant more than the future prospects generated by the contest alone. After all, PCGS seems to be the most well-known and respected of the TPGs as it is already.

...we're putting out a minor upgrade today that will let non-participants view the leaders.

    Thanks!

By the way, David. I would like to thank you and all the people involved in getting the systems up ON SCHEDULE for the World Series of Coin Trading. So far, things seem to have worked very well. I did have a problem initially signing in thru AOL, but was able to get in thru the microsoft browser and I see the AOL problem was resolved within a few hours. Anyway, GOOD JOB!. Steveimage
