Grades! Some '84 Topps for you stingray

Not too happy with this sub, I was expecting 9's for the leaf cards and definitely some more 10's on the '84 topps (no way im sending in a '84 Dale Berra if I dont think it's a 10). I'm sure some of them would be 10's on a resubmit, but man, its a pain to submit them again. Most are headed for the 'bay, if you are interested.

Friends don't let friends grade commons from the 1980's!

Seriously, if you do the math you'll come to the same conclusion I did-- that's it's a totally losing proposition. First, you buy the wax. Then, you take the time to bust it and sort the cards. Then you submit your stuff, and if you're REAL good, like Meathook or DGF or Eagle Eye Kd, you get 25-40% 10's. You sell the 10's for $20 each or so, basically eat the 9's and lower, and you're making MAYBE 3$ a slab. And that's if everything breaks right (the unopened material produces quality cards, PSA agrees that your cards are gem mint, etc.).

Sorry to say that I given up on 84s and pursuing other interests. Set is way too big and I opted out.

Though I still send in some '80's commons for grading I totally agree it's not smart... especially not to make a profit. I send in a lot of semi-stars but generally not duplicates. That is, I send in one of each semi-star that looks like a 10 and if so I likely sell. If a 9 I keep it. End up with a nice collection of Jose Cruz's, Steve Sax's, etc.... Oh ya, plus I primarily send in semi-stars I LIKE. My last sub I sent in two commons but they looked like smoking 10's. Seeing all these "grade posts" has me eager to see how I did!
  • I've actually done very well grading some '88 Topps, 10's of clemens and mattingly etc. have been selling for $30-$40 a pop (and they are pretty easy 10's). When I sent those '84 commons in, I figured $3 per 9 and $15 per 10, so if i got at least one 10 for every four 9's, I'd come out ahead. Just didn't happen for me this time.

At $3 per 9 and $15 per 10 you're looking at making $24 and spending $20 on grading, for a profit of $1 a card. Figure in your time, ebay fees, etc. and that's really burger flipping money.

I'm not criticizing your submission, just trying to point out why grading these cards is an excercise in futility.
  • Sure, I'm not saying that one 10 for every four 9's was my goal, I was just saying that was the breakeven point. If my experience had been more like what I've had with the '88's (more 10's than 9's), I would've done well.

Also, need to factor in postage fees to AND back from PSA. I find they can add 50 cents or a dollar per card if you only send in 20-30 cards! Makes it even harder to "breakeven." Sort of like all the people that go to Vegas and "break even" every weekend... but even with everybody breaking even they keep building bigger and more expensive hotels. Interesting....

I'd be interested in the PSA 9 '85 Leaf Tom Seaver if it's for sale/trade.
