How would you grade it and what about the scratches all around the rim, visible on the left obverse and right reverse.

I assume it's mint state, and not fully struck- maybe a 62?

The 2 on the reverse do not bother me. The 1 on the obverse looks like it is deep and bothers me. Probably for what you had to pay for this coin you should be absolutely happy. I would be unhappy with that obverse scratch.

That's on a slab with the bar code on the rear...RIGHT?

I've got a couple of mint state 5 lib's in those slabs and YOU HAVE TO BE REALLY CAREFUL WITH THEM....imageimage

I'm missing the point of this thread. Are you suggesting it was there when you bought it and you missed it, or are you suggesting PCGS damaged the coin, or..... What exactly is your point? No offense, just trying to understand where you are coming from.

This was the first "MS" 1921 Peace Dollar I ever purchased. It was years ago from David Lawrence and it was a *****1 in his rating system. I didn't know then what I know now and I hadn't looked at the coin closely for several years. As I was getting ready to sell this one and taking some pics, the scratches jumped out in the pics. (I'm sure they are scratches). It should have been bagged IMO. and now I have to figure out how to get out from under it without screwing someone who doesnt see the coin for the plastic.

A dealer should not ever sell a coin without disclosing the fact that there are scratches on it. I think collectors are duty bound to do the same thing.
  • Looks like a coin #1 in PCGS grading by the digit on the slab.

Are you sure they aren't a die scratch or die polishing line?

image I wonder if David Lawrence was the original submitter on this coin?

If I only had a dollar for every VAM I have...err...nevermind...I do!! image

I agree wholeheartedly. I just hate to be left holding the $300 bag. If I join the PCGS club and send it in for review, I wonder what I can recover?

I don't think you have to be a club member to request a review but there are specific guidelines on what can and cannot be reviewed. For example, the submission center states for a presidential review:

<< <i>** Available for coins previously submitted through the Walkthrough, Express & Regular service levels within 30 days of the returned order. You must send a copy of your original PCGS invoice. >>

Given that, the coin does not qualify.

You could, however, submit the coin for the grading guarantee making note of the scratches. I believe that this could be done through an authorized PCGS dealer.

I would suggest contacting PCGS Customer Service to find out your specific options. They will honor their grading guarantee.

What this thread means is that you have learned a lot

since you bought the coin. Your eye now picks up defects

that years ago you would not necessarily notice. Sometimes

the cost of knowledge and experience comes high. Consider

    this part of your tuition.

I would advise that you look on teletrade and ebay at other 21 Peace Dollars, In my opinion for a peace dollar its a typical average MS63.
  • braddickbraddick Posts: 24,176 ✭✭✭✭✭
I honestly believe the graders missed what you now notice. Had they graded the coin with those scratches accounted for, and the coin wasn't bagged because of it, I'd think MS60 or MS61 would be appropriate.

If you believe its overgraded and you dont want to leave the next guy holding the bag, then submit it for grade guarantee.

If PCGS wants to maintain it as a 63, then sell it via auction and let the buyers decide for themselves.
  • .......with the notation that you had it recently regraded and Pcgs stood by the grade

Are you sure those are scratches?

With that said, I don't really like the coin .... my first thought was that it was circulated.
