Revenge of the Nerds

Here's my showcase story from American Idol - I know many can relate.
Revenge of the Nerds!
This little guy lives in Levittown, NY and is still in high school.
I'm thinking major league geek?
But, now? He's a superstar of sorts!
Kids from his HS, who wouldn't piss on his hair if it were on fire, are now telling everyone...
Before:
"I think I once talked to him in the hall?"
"He goes here?"
"Isn't he in the Latin Club?"
"I think my sister once beat him up"
Now:
"me and him are major buds!"
"we need to have him over, it's party time!"
"I've always thought he was cute and sweet"
"he's one of my best friends, ever since the 3rd grade!"
What a difference a little national television coverage can do for a person?
Don't ya just love America or what!!!

I'm awfully sorry...
Raw nerve...
Doesn't take Dr. Phil to figure this one out.
Did my sister kick your ass in high school?
His voice certainly does not match his build/profile, does it??? I think he'll make it a few more weeks, you?
<< <i>Mike,

He's got the major league likeability factor...
Hard to say...
I think he's gettin plenty of votes from the young girls.
I just would like to be the fly on the wall back in his HS when he returns and see what the perception of him is like?
I'm just having some fun with this...
It's kind of a nice human interest story...
Probably no better or worse than the other stuff we talk about?

On the girls side, I have a feeling that Mandisa (sp) will be the last girl standing and Chris on the men's side...You?
... my opinion? .. Paris has this thing won hands down.
.... alright, now where do I turn in my 'guy-card' ???
ALWAYS Looking for Chris Sabo cards!
As a former Long Islander I can tell you a few things about the life 'chicken little' has led/will have:
1) He definitely got shoved in a locker or two in the past.
2) Most of his classmates probably hated him and are now jealous of him
3) He will get more poontang in the next two years because of Idol then he would've in his lifetime without Idol.
Win or lose--the kid hit the freakin jackpot
Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12
Looking for Al Hrabosky and any OPC Dave Campbells (the ESPN guy)
<< <i>I'll discuss it as long as they keep the thread alive!

To start
There's actually an AI thread in the NONSPORT forum that will stay up - that's where we discussed it last year - I never expected my thread to survice here.
But, until...
Mandisa and Katherine are strong, but look out for Kellie Pickler if she can get up the nerve to belt out a tune!
On the mens - yes Chris or Elliot; my favorite is Taylor since auditions started!
So, if you like talking about AI - head over to the nonsport forum and get your input immortalized in ink!

I'll second that. This show would be far more compelling if the contestants actually had to write and perform their own songs. As it stands it's hard for me to get real excited about it.

OK Carew4me
I'm gonna have to back this up.
At the AMA awards this year, Clay Aiken who was the runner up to Ruben Studdard, won the "Fan's Choice" award and the other candidates included Justin Timberlake, Beyonce, 50cent, matchbox20 and tim mcgraw!
And at this year's Grammys...
Kelly Clarkson, who just a few short years ago was a wannabe contestant on "American Idol," won best female vocal performance for her song "Since U Been Gone" and best pop vocal album for "Breakaway." Since U Been Gone!
Also, AI winner Carrie Underwood will have her plate full this year at the CMT awards for country in April.
She has been nominated for Best video by a female artist, Best video from an artist's major debut album,
Video that celebrates the human condition in a positive and optimistic way, etc. I got tired of writing all the awards she's up for!!!!
If you don't know what you're talking about, but keep your mouth closed, no one will know, but....
Enough said

I doubt Carew meant karaoke in the literal sense. But, Mike, I think he has something of a point. If anyone else here has ever been in a band before you know what really separates the wheat from the chaff, so to speak, is the ability to write your own songs. You can find a pretty voice to sing them if you look hard enough. To actually find someone that can write the tunes is a rare thing indeed.
I'm not trying to diminish what these people bring to the table, but I do think this is a point worth emphasizing.

Boo
You're an intelligent guy.
Neither one of us just came off a banana boat, then while riding thru the cotton fields, fell off the turnip truck and found our way to this forum...
I made what I thought was a fun thread on the reality of the life of one of the contestants...
We've all been there in high school....
Then you have the first quote and the second....
This has nothing to do with either the quality of American Idol or my thread about Kevin and EVERYTHING to do with trying to belittle a situation.
No where in my thread did I ask anyone what they thought of American Idol or the quality of contestants.
Now, I'm not saying OT can't come to a thread - but once in - I think I pretty much brought up facts to refute anything about the quality of the winners and runners up.
What these young people will bring to the table down the road is hard to say...
They may write great songs and may not...
The amount of people that "stay" in music for many years is probably way less than 1%.
Every person who has won in the past 4 years has done incredibly well.
If the short reference of accolades in the industry that I cited is not enough, then some people know more and have more special intuition on how to judge talent and it's accomplisment.
I've said way more than I should have to...

Whoa there, big fella! First off, who's Kevin? And where's his thread? I've been looking around, but I don't see it... In any case, like I said I don't want to diminish the contestants of the show, nor do I want to insult anyone who enjoys watching the show. I just wanted to point out how I think the show could be made better, and illustrate why some of us don't find it very compelling. No hidden agenda-- I promise
First off, Kevin is the nerd Boo
The AI people, who this thread was more directed at, knew who he was.
Your comments along with any criticism by Carew are so far OT from the spirit of my thread that I can see how you may not have made the connection.
I'm not looking to argue with you - it's Carew I have the beef with.
Your point is taken - but to find young talent who write their own, original arrangements, and put a show of that nature together would be virtually impossible.
I think the awards that have been won by the past performers speaks volumes for itself.
No problem Boo
I don't mind the AI criticism or if someone finds the show totally lacking in any redeeming value - again - this is far off the topic of...
a nerd found his way to Hollywood, is lasting, and will have this as a life altering experience that most young men of his stature and appearance can only dream about - in fact this would make a good movie.
And before anyone starts with the people in glass houses thing...
I consider myself a nerd also!
<< <i>I've followed "Idol" this year and I've decided that voting for who you think should win sorta blows. I could vote a hundred times for the people I want to win but would feel better served to vote a hundred times for the jabronie that should be carted off. With that said, Kevin or Ace (Scott Stapp wannabe, which is not even cool) would get my hundred votes.
>>
Scott Stapp wannabe? Jesus-- the original was bad enough.
Stingray
Revenge of the Nerds II:
He has survived another week!
He is now in the final 6 of the men!!!
I'm not ashamed to say that me and Kevin went to different schools together at different times!
Only in America!
Ya gotta love it!
<< <i>i wouldve rather seen that dude "Ace" go home instead of Gideon.. >>
Totally agree.
If anyone missed Taylor Hicks, he will bring a smile to your face.
He's a 21st century Michael McDonald/Joe Cocker rolled up in one!

My Auctions
If I'm only allowed to give my opinion of Kevin, I'll say this.
I'm completely green with envy of the little guy. And he will pull more tail back at the old HS than he ever dreamed of.
That being said, I'll bet there are a thousand people in this country with 10X the looks and 10X the talent.
I'll respectfully say this Mike.....You're "proof" holds little weight in my opinion if you know how the music industry works. Record labels and T.V. shows, along with other variables such as what CD's Walmart will allow and what songs DJ's will play, has a lot more bearing on music success than talent alone.
And although I watch the show like you do and am amazed by the talent of those involved, I believe there is a major "influence" as to who is in the top 12, and a lot of factors that determine their future success. There are 100 people who could take their place tomorrow, and if backed by the show, would be just as successful.
Just my opinion, no harm meant.
Back to the show.
shawn
edited to say: I'm rooting for Taylor also!!
<< <i>You're "proof" holds little weight in my opinion if you know how the music industry works >>
Shawn
It's hard to talk in a chat room and get the point across.
Your thinking is correct but backwards.
No where do I say they are the ONLY people who can make it and that it was talent, as such, that pushed them to the top - albeit momentary and quite ephemeral for sure.
It was the other way around - someone had made a somewhat pejorative statement about the winners of AI and related it to karaoke.
My only point is that the winners have gone on to do some really good things.
In no way am I saying how, why and what happened to make them a success. That's ALL I'm saying is that talented people have won on AI and have gone on to win accolades in the industry.
I hope this clears it up...
On the replacement...
Having lived as long as I have - if there's one thing I've learned...
We can all be replaced...
I know very little about how the music business works or the inner workings...
I think many factors are at work that affect who survives AI - but to be honest - I don't overthink too many things...
I think it sucks the life of it.
And, I too like Taylor! But Katherine is hot!
