Does anyone care to divulge their initial strategy in the WS?

MrBreezeMrBreeze Posts: 1,036 ✭✭✭
Since it did not cost me a dime (well, kind of), and I have already executed my strategy, I figure it is alright to talk about it. I think it would lend credence to a great deal of the movement in "real life" coins. I tried to get all of the coins that I like/collect in VF30-XF40. I think that is the sweet spot in the market right now (I may be crazy, but that's alright). I went with Seated quarters (S mints, O mints, and a few important P mints) and Barber Halves (96-o, 97-o, 97-s, 04-s, 13, 14, 15) for the bulk of my purchases. I also went with a few coins from the other Seated and Barber series. I also endulged a bit and bought an 1873-cc no arrows Seated Quarter. I figure it would be fun to pretend, that just for a few months, I had a chance to complete the series. Finally, I decided to play a little gold and bought as many MS66 Gold $50 Eagles as I could get. At $565, I figured that was the cheapest way to play the gold market. Finally, I threw in some coins I wanted to "own," just because I probably never will in real life.

Strategy...hmmm...learn about a series or two that interests you...buy coins that you can afford...see as many coins in that/those series as you can...connect with dealers and other collectors who share your interests...be flexible...buy what you like...like what you buy and hold...sell some coins now and then...that about sums up my "strategy".

Edit: You changed the title to include WS. I thought you meant overall strategy. My post is irrelevant. image

I diversified. From early dollars to Kennedys. It was hard not to just pick the stuff I like.

I agree, it was difficult to buy anything other than the things I like and collect. I realize that is not a winning strategy, but, it will be fun. I found out how little I do know about other series and was pretty much lost on the price guide for those series.

I went for super rarities - I cornered the market on 1884 trade dollars (mintage is 10) and bought the 2 highest I could with the mil.

Most of the coins I bought wer 40K and up. I can't see buying dozens and dozens of pieces of "penny candy".

Anyone else going for the big stuff?

One big coin goes up $1000.00. One hundred Widgets go up 20 bucks a coin. Who wins ?

Long term maybe the big coin is a holder in real life but this is short term. Short term, like this, you dump the widgets after the rise, if there is a rise.

I just kinda went price guide shopping and stuck to copper. For good or bad, bought mainly rarities.

I'm heavily weighted in half dollars, and none of them are Kennedys.

BTW, up $2800 so far. That came from movement in the DCAM SMS Jeffersons I own, though.

My strategy was simple. Buy the coins that are rare and undervalued in the Lincoln cent proof category. I wasn't the only one with that strategy. Stewart will be proud of me. Steveimage

Mine was even simpler - I'm not playing. I'm going to have a hard enough time staying on top of my fantasy baseball team, if I ever let myself get drawn into the WS I'd never get any work done. image

I mixed it up with 1/2 being low end movers such as AU - MS62 bust halves, and low end popular coins such as 01-S barber quarters 1916 SLQs, and PR64-66 Seated Half material. The other 1/2 I used to buy high end raritites that were in upcoming auctions. Because if they aren't traded, the price won't move. Might as well focus on what is in the market rather than to "hope" it will show up.

My strategy- buy what I am focused on with "real" dollars and see how it plays out- Misc. better dates in all series, Half cents, and early type.... The only difference with 'cyber money" is I am buying in higher grades.

As an investor of pl and dmpl morgans in real life, the World Series required no additional thought.

It was interesting to go to buy coins I actually own and see they were already purchased.

It was also interesting to see that for World Series purposes I could buy some coins at very affordable prices that I have not been able to find in the marketplace. I trust my watch list coins will not drop in value, since I stand ready to buy them in real life for real dollars. I just hope that day comes sooner rather than later, and when it does, here's what follows:

I bought about $1,000,000 worth of ultra modern coins. No coin more than a couple years old.

    I don't have the time.

But if I did my strategy would be as follows. The PCGS guide lags behind actual sales. I'd watch the auctions and other sources and chart what coins are selling above PCGS levels. Those are the ones that will move up in the coming months.
