Grading 1912 Quarter Eagle Gold coin

A family member recently gave me this 1912 Quarter Eagle.

Can some tell me where it was minted?

What would be the best method for me to have it graded so that I may determine its value and how much should I expect to pay for that service?

Can anyone on the forum tell from the photos I've posted what grade it may be?

Thanks, Jim

All 1912 quarter eagles were minted in Philadelphia. Your coin looks to be AU. I'd have to see it in hand to be more specific.

I sell these on ebay all the time. If it's AU then you should get 200-250 on ebay.
  • Thanks all fro the quick repies.

I don't think I want to sell it now, but I would like to have it graded.

There is a coin dealer in my area that does the PCGS grading, is that the best place to go?

What should I expect him to charge me for that service?

    Thanks, Jim

Probably au, but the most telling thing is, it looks like it's been cleaned pretty harshly. Look at the substantial horizontal hairlines front and back. I don't think it would holder at pcgs, ngc.

I agree with the parallel cleaning lines. BB.

Nice coin. As others have pointed out, it was minted in Philadelphia.

The coin appears to be XF/AU to my eye. I would expect to get between $175 and $250 for the coin. There seem to be some hairlines on the obverse in particular, and I'd have to see the coin in-hand to make a more accurate price determination.

Not cleaned. These coins did not have raised rims to protect the fields so circulated Indian quarter eagles have many hairlines. This is typical for the series.

  • Thanks for all the answers. What a nice forum this is.

To my knowledge this coin hasn't been cleaned. My mother was given this coin in the late 1930's from her father. She claims she never cleaned it. It's undetermined if he or someone else did. Like many have said, the best way to grade a coin is to have it in hand.

I've uploaded a photo that shows the largest scratch.

    Thanks again, Jim

I've seen worse scratches in all top tier slabs. As I said before, these coins do not have a raised rim so the fields are unprotected and some fine scratches are to be expected. All TPGS's make allowances for this.

  • Thanks very much Perry. I'm learning a lot from this. I just said to my wife that I would like to attend a coin show sometime. When I was a child I had an interest in coin collecting. Maybe you'll get a new member to the hobby!
