The rim at 12:00. It may have been a jewelery piece.

problem as in bodybag type or problem as in minting error ? like doubling on the shield ?

Whatcha mean, RYK ? Cleaning ? ( I think not) I think it is plastic holding it at NOON o'clock, or ?

and might I commend you on the picture !. Good shot. I wish I could do that, like that ... .but I can't make gold out of a penny image ... and since I'm editing, I might as well say the grade is ef40 and it's in an NGC holder. Is that the problem ? Okay, how about the placement of the mintmark ... is it suspect ? Isn't it usually directly over the V in FIVE ?.... I dunno. I'm lost.

A little PVC spot just above the wing on the right side of the reverse? You don't see PVC on gold all that often, though...
  • I don't collect gold but isn't there supposed to be a ribbon that says In God We Trust above the eagle?

Only after 1866; before then there was no motto on U.S. coinage (except for the two-cent piece which adopted it in 1864). The Dahlonega Mint closed in 1861 as a casualty of the Civil War, so if a Dahlonega coin had the motto I'd be very surprised!

Is this a trick question. I like the coin as it is or at least as it appears. Not enough wrong to worry about for me.

Is there PVC above the eagle's left wing...or is it just some dirt?

Other than the rim ding at 12, the green spot on the top edge of the rightmost wing, and the abrasive cleaning, it's perfect. image

First, I am not familiar with the series, so I may be way off base.

The eagle's wings look just a little too detailed. I'm wondering if they may have been tooled.

That spot in the crook of the wing doesn't look PVC-ish to me. I'll defer to experts, but it looks more like dirt with a touch of that verdigris that happens on copper. I dunno. Looks pretty nice, all in all. That alone wouldn't put me off of this coin if everything else added up.

i do not see a problem that would stop me from wanting
    it for my collection.

I dont think that is PVC...storage in old leather bags will occasinally leave that green on gold. I saw a very fresh deal with some O and D mint quarter eagles walk into my friends shop. Pretty cool. Every one of the coins had that in crevaces. I helped him take a toothpick and a q tip and just blot it once or twice and it came off just like dirt. PVC is tough to remove.

    Just my two cents.

The problem is the pic doesn't fit on my screen.

Thanks for the opinions and advice. I emailed a pic of the coin to a favorite experts, and he also did not think it was PVC. My bad. And to think that I might pass over an otherwise excellent coin.

The biggest problem (and most of your collection has the same one) is that it is made out of gold instead of an attractive looking metal such as silver.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

    cleaned abrasively

and also mechnical fixing/cleaning on for sure one possible two places on the coin subtle to say the least

and with the photo this is a guesstimate

i wouyld need to see the coin in hand sight seen to be sure this is a must with this coin

    Micheal,

I cannot tell whether or not coin has been cleaned based on this Heritage photo. I will get a look at the coin first hand and report back.

Hey! I DO have a couple silver coins.

I dont think that it has been harshly cleaned Robert...I dont think it is virgin original, but not scrubbed or anything.

It looks to me like the wing tips have been tooled.

Same here. Looks like a nice coin for a circulated pre- Civil War half eagle. I have some original NGC and PCGS slabed early gold with spots of green waxy substance similar to this coin. I don't know if it came from an old leather purse or not but it sure isn't PVC. Also, I can't find the evidence of tooling, abrasive cleaning, or jewelry use that others are refering to. Is this coin raw or slabed?

The coin is a very rare date and in a PCGS AU-50 holder.
