What Causes This On A Lincoln Cent?

Didn't notice this damage? on the Obverse of this Lincoln till I took some pic's and starting the cropping process. Is this some sort of damage or what? Trying to learn something today Appreciate any help provided.

I've seen quite a few '50s Lincolns tone similarly, where the loose paper fold over cover for the mint set touched only the high points of the coin, the rest was protected by being sunken into the hole in the mint set. The colors are very close to what you see here, oftentimes. I have no idea what would cause such toning on a 1909, however.
