Barber folks - Does this PCGS graded, XF-40, 1904-S Barber half look familiar?

This 04-s looks very familiar, maybe it was offered raw awhile ago, or maybe I seen it in a different TPG service holder.......any thoughts?

Nice enough looking coin, but I don't remember seeing it before either raw or in another TPG holder.

It is not the cracked out NGC XF40 that I sold to Cary eight months back. I don't believe I have ever seen it.

    Tyler,

That might have been the XF-40, 1904-s that I was thinking about. Thanks.

Maybe the market is seeing a fresh 04-s.

I was toying with the idea of pulling the trigger on this one. Looks purty to me but it isn't an XF45. Might make a nice placeholder though. It is definetely an XF40. No chance at a 45 on that one. Just a little too much wear on the forehead of Liberty.

His photo's are sh!tty, but the coin does appear nice and original. But anybody who pays that price better be planning on holding for several lifetimes or they will never get out of it. The market has been supplied with and abundance of 04-s halves lately.

Jim, the number of upper VF-XF coins in this last year has been minimal. What you have seen are numerous fine and lower VF as well as AU coins. I haven't seen an XF45 except for a cruddy cleaned SEGS coin and a couple of ANACS AU50 coins that were down right FUGLY. I believe his offer price is a bit high but AU coins have been selling in the $5K range.

The prices for 1904-S halves in AU have gone thru the roof - and if you remember in the not too distant past, we were saying that as well - so, it only goes to show that the lesser graded coins in XF 40 would also get pricier.

Personally, I think this is a fair asking price for this coin. This coin is not stagnet and should appreciate slowly, so for all of us Barberfanatics, this is a prime opportunity to add a choice circulated coin to our sets. Next year we'll all look at the current asking price of this coin as a bargain.

Having sold ( sold in October, 2005 ) my PCGS AU 55 example to a well known dealer of Barber material, I can attest to the fact that I was paid double what I originally paid for the coin in September, 2003. When I originally bought this coin in 2003, everyone - and I mean everyone - said I was crazy to spend $3000 for this coin, as it was only worth $2200 "Max" !!

I wonder what everyone would say if I told them what I had to pay for the PCGS AU 58 that currently resides in my set, purchased last July.

    Jim,

Like Craig said, I've seen an abundance of AU graded 1904-S's within the last year, but XF 04-S's.........have been few and far between. If I had the $4,000 for this coin (which I don't at this time), I would probably pull the trigger on this coin, even if it may be somewhat overpriced.

With $4K burning a hole in the pocket (thanks for the nice tax return Uncle Sam), do you get the 1904-S in PCGS XF40 or do you get a 1892-O micro o in PCGS G4?

    Inquiring minds want to know.

You'r right the coins I have been seeing were in the lower Au-50-53 range specimens. I guess I am just a bit conservative on what IMO was strong prices since I am no longer buying as a collector. I have to look at the profit side now??

    Craig,

Very tough choice. If I had the $4,000, I'd probably go with the 04-S in XF-40. There always seems to be a 92 micro O around in the AG-3, and G-4 grades.......but not the 04-S in XF.

Everyone knew I had an interest in this coin. On Tuesday night when the coin was winding down, I hemmed and hawed on buying it. My wife gave me the thumbs up so there was no issue there or with the funds. Still, something bugged me internally. Feedback is fine on the seller. He said he would work with me on paypal if I pay the 2.9% fees. No problem there and very gracious of him. Still, something just didn't feel right. Lastly, his auction website states to contact him if the coin doesn't sell to make an offer.

After the auction, I made an offer of $3,500 including shipping and I would cover the 2.9% paypal fee. He came back with additional large photos of the coin (very nice of him) and asked what happened to the $3,960 price? I responded back that the coin didn't sell and this was my offer. He came back that the price was $3,960 with no movement. He also stated that he was getting sellers remorse and that he had other people interested in the coin. (Classic ploys to get the uninformed to hurry up and buy which I later addressed with him) I thought about it and then offered $3,900 and asked him to give an active duty military guy a $60 break because he then wouldn't be paying ebay any fees for selling the coin. He came back and said he wouldn't budge, that he knew the Barber Half market very well, had 250+ hits on this auction with 20+ people tracking it. Since he wouldn't budge and in fact, added $1 to his auction price, I bowed out.

So if there is anyone of you folks who were one of "the other interested people", best of luck. Something still just doesn't feel right. I'd like to hear back from whomever bought the coin. I'm hoping it was just me.

So does anyone have an 04-S in PCGS XF45 they would like to part with?

  • Craig,

I think you made the right choice. I didn't like the fact either, that the seller said to contact him directly if the coin didn't sell on ebay. You always have the micro o in G-4.

I don't know the price of the Micro O but I think I would go for that.

    Craig,

Always go with your gut feeling. If you were uncomfortable with the seller, pass. You mentioned that he had great feedback, so he sounds reputable.

I can't blame you for trying to get the coin for $2900+ and I can understand his reluctance in going that low. But for him not to reduce the coin by $60 is crazy. Especially if he still has to pay 2.9% to Ebay if it sell directly thru one of their auctions.

I'm not that interested in the XF 40, nor a XF 45...but would like a nice VF 30 - 35 for my raw set. I have two: F 12 & VF 20 in anacs holders - plus my AU 58 in my first tier set.

A micro O would be a nice addendum to your set, but I'd wait for a better example than a G4 to come around.
I know of a VF 20 residing in someone else's second tier set that maybe you could cajole it from him ?

Good luck trying to complete your set; you're up against alot of Barberites for those VF/XF halves...yours truly included.
