Help me Decide - Which of these to buy....

Ok I am going to shell out a little cash with bbcexchange and buy some unopened stuff.
I have narrowed it down to these choices:

78T Baseball wax box

or

79T, 80T baseball wax boxes

or

79T baseball rack box.

What do you guys think?
And don't ask which yr I like best because I cannot make up my mind!! image

Hmmmmm, That is a tough choice. Well, In my opinion if you want the highest quality card always go with rack. However, wax yields pretty decent stuff too. And I think BBC had the 1980 wax box on sale. I guess it would all depend on what your plans are for the cards.image

  • My primary goal is to get some nice cards from those 3 years since I did not start collecting until 1981. I don't have thousands of cards from 78/79/80 like I do for 81 and up. Now if I were to be lucky enough to score a 10 of Henderson or Murray or Smith or Molitor I'd be tempted to sell and buy more cards. So my question is am I more likely to get a 78 Murray or Molitor, 79 Smith or an 80 Henderson from a wax box? Obviously a question we probably cannot answer so I dunno. I want all 3 but not sure I want to spend $1200 right now for them.

lots of luck in past w/ 78 topps wax boxes from bbce.

80 topps are prone to chipping, gum-stains and major frustration.

79 topps are really tough on centering, but i cant speak from personal experience here.

if you like to gamble: 79 topps wax box

if you don't like to gamble: 78 topps wax

    good luck and SCANS please!!!

JJ, Im sure someone here could do the math and figure out your chances of hitting a card from within the boxes you described. But it would be just a guess. All the cards you are looking for have thier issues, The Henderson and Smith cards have centering issues and the Trammell, Molitor has Print quality and centering issues. It is pretty much just a crap shoot, But it is fun as hell ! Good Luck in whatever you decide and post some nice scans when you bust'em

I would go with the 78 wax box. Centering on the 79's can be a real beotch.

Consider buying a nmt set on Ebay for a fraction of the cost. Your ratio of gradable cards to dogs is likely to about the same, you don't have to worry about it being searched, and--- oh yeah, you'll save a few hundred bucks.

  • The problem with buying sets and/or singles is you lose the excitement of opening the packs. Honestly that is what I find most enjoyable about collecting cards. The thrill of ripping open a pack and seeing whats in it.

Another vote to avoid 1979. I was a Topps dealer in 1979 and 1980 and I still have many thousands of those stupid off-center 1979 cards.
