Draped Bust - Holed and Plugged?

The coin is nice, I'll give it that. Sure looks a bit funny to me though. See the spot underneath the eagle's right claw (holding the olive branch) on the reverse. I thought the spot between the top of Liberty's head and the B in LIBERTY was the hole on the other side but now I'm thinking that "spot" is too low to match the location and I can't really see another spot on the obverse that would signify a hole. Holed and plugged?

  • Possibly it was only a started hole and didn't go all the way through.

I too was looking at that one the other night, but it gave me a funny feeling.....the kind that says "don't bid".

You could be right about the repair job. Consider that the reverse may have a slight rotation and the strange areas obverse and reverse would match up.

Looks like it could be gouged, holed and plugged, or otherwise damaged. Rim damage also. It is not even close to R.5, a fairly easy R.3. This is a sunken reverse die variety, weak center strike from the sinking reverse, intermediate die state but not 119a. Only buy if you can get it REAL CHEAP, for a holed coin price.

    Interesting side note...

When I made this thread only 31 people had looked at that auction. I wonder how many have now? The counter at the bottom of the auction isn't working right now so I can't tell.
