  • Each coin has a number assigned by PCGS... for example

A 1914-S Buffalo Nickel graded MS64 by PCGS will have starting on the left a number of 3926.64

The 3926 is assigned to 1914-S Buffal Nickel... the .64 tells you the grade.... the number after the slash is a serial number assigned to each individual coin so you may look it up on the site. If you send in coins for grading normally they will be in numerical order from the group you sent.

He just gave you the answer to the coin number. The series number is exactly what it implies - the series. In his example, Buffalo nickels would be the series.

Each series (such as Mint State Morgans) has a number, each coin within the series has a number beginning at 1 for the first coin in the series and moving up to the last coin. I believe PCGS has recently abandoned these numbers.
  • "each coin" "Each series"

I have 2 coins that don't have a series. One's in a green label and the other a very scratched up blue label so I don't think it's been newly slabbed. This will give it away. Each coin number only has 3 digits.

  • He is talking about the coin and series numbers that were added on the line above the serial number and which first appeared on the PCGS 7 slab (Jan 1999). The series number is a number they have assigned to the general type. Roosevelt dimes are Series 32, Kennedy halves I believe is Series 77 etc The coin number then starts a 1 for the first date and mint and is increased by 1 for the next date and mint (including proof issues) and so on. As robertpr said, they were phased out beginning in November 2005 and I don't believe any of the slabs coming from PCGS have them anymore.

Edited to correct the beginning date for PCGS 7. Jan 1999 not 1990.
