Toning spots and NCS questions

I have a 1936 Texas Commem graded MS65 by PCI (sorry no pictures). The coin looks flawless except for a few spots of dark toning. The spots of toning are very very small and are about the size of a pinhead and are scattered over the obverse only. It looks like dust may have settled on the coin long ago and over time toned the coin. I would like to crack out the coin and submit to PCGS. I think it will make MS65. I like blast white coins and wish my Texas didn't have the toning spots. Would acetone do anything for the spots? Im 99.9% sure the spots are not PVC and are NT. If the acetone will not work is it worth sending to NCS? Can they remove toning? What is the cost if my coin is worth $200? Will the spots affect a PCGS grade? Sorry for all the questions.

The charge 1% of the value to evaluate, the additional to "conserve" if they can do it. You have to call them for a submission form. You have to be either a collectors society member ($99, but you get 5 economy submissions, plus I got a free slabbed SAE), or an ANA member (cheap!).

For my first try, I sent a 1895-O Morgan last week. I received a status that it has been "evaluated" and "sent to the lab" - so I think it looks good, and maybe it can go to an NGC slab. This coin is a solid AU with a nicer New Orleans strike, but the surfaces were ugly grey color with a big fingerprint on the obverse field. I suspect that it might have been a PL at one time, then poorly kept.

  • Acetone won't do anything for toning spots...

If you're feeling adventerous, get yourself some jewelluster and dip it yourself... get some junk silver halves, and practice on those first... just use a 3 second dip, then immediately rinse well with water, then pat dry... search the forums for more detailed instructions if you so desire

    sell the coin as is

and go out and buy a texas in ms66 PCGS that is blast white for 250-350 with great eye appeal that you absolutely love

  • will a coin dipped in jewelluster be body bagged for "cleaning"? I dont want this to happen.
  • Michael gave you the best advice. As far as NCS, after postage back and forth, fees, not to mention that you'll end up with a doctored coin which may not even be slabbable after the fact, you're just better off dumping it for the best price you can get and using the money to buy a different one which you like better. It's not worth the expense, time and trouble over a MS-65 Texas
