What is the "golden splasher" referred to in ANR's description of the Saint Patrick farthi
I was looking at the new ANR auction catalog (the pictures are great by the way; they should give that photographer a raise). In Lots # 5-9, they are selling Saint Patrick farthings. In each description, it makes note of a "golden splasher". I can see what they are describing on the coin, but I don't know what the purpose of this element is? Is it sort of like a silver plug to bring the coin's intrinsic value up to whatever a farthing is supposed to be worth? What is the splasher made of? How does it get minted with the coin? Were things like this common? Any other information would be appreciated. Attached is a link.
