two half eagles, 1856P and 1868S *grades revealed*

XF45 1856P 197,990 Minted. Finest known is a MS65.
This coin has a lot of luster! Every star is ringed with it, Liberty
is surrouned by it, and just gushes it for the grade. The coin has
some marks and overall "markiness" but it just sparkles under the
light in hand. Very amazing look to it for the grade.

F15 1868S 52,000 Minted. Finest known is a MS61.
Well the first thing I noticed about this coin was its coating
of grime in every crevice on the obverse, but not a lot on the
reverse. It just totally outlines everything on the obverse. In hand,
on the reverse, the mint mark is very visible to the naked eye. I am
hard pressed to find any remaining luster on the coin.. but i did
locate some above the date and shielded by liberty's shoulders.
The coin as a mark or two, but nothing that truely upsets me.
Liberty is clearly reabable in Liberty's "?tiara?/head thingy".

Feel free to guess the grade, say you hate them, or any other
random thought you care to share.

thanks

AU50 & VG10. I'm not crazy about either one. The 1856 has too many marks on the obverse and the 1868S has just too much wear for a gold coin. When I think of gold I think of high grade, even for the earlier, scarcer pieces.
Low grade gold has just never caught my interest.

I'll say AU50 for the first coin. I'd have guessed higher, but you said it is pretty amazing and all for the given grade. Definitely AU something. If they called it XF45, you just bought the nicest XF45 half eagle on the planet.

That second one... VG10? Maybe Fine. I'm not really thrilled with it.

I recognize that these are both somewhat scarce coins, especially the second one.

    Ryk,

Yea at night my pictures are very bad. I do much better with
good old sunshine coming into my apt.

    intocoins, good guessing!

    291fifth,

to get better than what you see takes at least double the money!

100proof, you are not rude, your guessing is quite good.

mirabela, i really like how this xf45 has luster all over. it sparkles
with all the hits combined with luster. quite different then what i am
used to seeing. i think it is very nice for the grade.

The 1868S is slightly harder to get but if you want a very nice
example, be prepared to spend > 600 dollars to 1000.

and for some reason i think i see doubling on the 1868S on liberty.
but i am not sure about that. like on the back of the neck, near the
hair on top.. but it is probably just a trick of the light.
