2004 vs 2005 Proof Platinum Eagles

Can anybody shed any light on the mintage numbers for 2004 vs 2005 proof Platinum Eagles? I have the latest stats on the 2005 Proofs from Numismatic News but I don't have the 2004 figures. 2005 Proofs look ridiculously rare, like the 2005 1/2 Ounce showing only 1,520 sets sold!!! I'm curious because all the 2004 proofs seem to cost a fortune.

2005 Mintages for all (4) Proof coins should come out above 2004 mintages for the same denominations. When you read a report about coins sold or sets sold, sometimes the #'s are not combined giving the appearance of wildly low sales figures. But, as in the case of the 1/2 2005 coin you mention, I believe there were 4,000 sets sold as well as the sale of individual coins, resulting in a mintage above the 2004 level (possibly 800 coins give or take more?)

My personal guesses: Final figures are not out yet on the 2005 Proof Plats. $10's may come in around 8,000 coins, $25's around 6,000 - 6,500 coins, $50's around 5,500-6,000+ coins and $100's around 6,500-7,000+ coins. If I am right, again, all above 2004 mintages, but, great low mintages none the less. IMHO, 2005 Proof Plat sets bought from the Mint less than 60 days ago are now approaching a 20% gain in value already! Congrats to everyone that bought them!!

P.S. And, as low as those Proof 2005 mintages may be, don't forget that the Mint State $100 Plat mintage from 2005 appears to be right around 6,300 coins as well making that coin nearly as cool as most of the PROOF 2005 Plats!

  • Thanks for the reply wondercoin. As for the figures, Numismatic News clearly seperates US Mint Proof Sales from dealer bought MS bullion, so that where I get those from. Does anybody here have the 2004 figures from last years' Numismatic News?

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Of course, some of 2005 numbers will change as US Mint still sells 2005 proof Plat product

  • It looks like only the 1/4 oz is still for sale on the mint website.

I just ordered 100 of them so I can sell them for a 300% profit in a year from now

    just kidding
