Check out auction 8769160402 if you want to see a real head scratcher. Just goes to show, the value of something is whatever someone's willing to pay.

    That's ridiculous. That's not even a 10. I would have thought that to be a crazy price for a 10 - for even a 10 Nolan Ryan.

  • For a 1986 Topps Danny Heep Psa 9????????????? I'm glad I only collect vintage cards. What a waste of money.

How many of these do you want?I have a slew of them somewhere un graded.CHEAP!!!!

  • These are probably the only two Mets fans who even remember Danny Heep.

gotta love a good ole fashioned pissing war.
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

This 1986 Gary Carter went for more and it was only a PSA 9.

  • Yes, it's a ridiculous price ... but the key here is '86 Mets. The collectors for this team are relentless. Put a Rafael Santana game-used bat on eBay and you'll likely be able to make your monthly mortgage payment with it. Crazy, but true.

That is really wild! Assuming every mid-80's common, in PSA 9, sold for that much most of us would be multi-millionaires! image

I think the difference is that this auction doesn't mention the magical word 'Mets'. Probably would've shot over $100 if the seller listed it as a Mets card.

LOL! Larry, if every mid '80's common sold for that much you'd have every swinging richard who ever posted a message on these boards making a run on '80's wax at BBC Exchange like you've never seen before. I don't know what would happen to these boards if it were possible to break wax and consistently make money. We'd probably register the first recorded death of a man keeling over from multiple orgasms.

Absolutely! Great point and I can't believe I missed that. I think this guy cost himself $100 by not putting "Mets" in the title.

  • Steve, a.k.a. PANTSMAN, is a nut-case Met collector. He NEEDS every card in 9 or better...period. He will pay whatever it takes to be the first guy with a card and he rarely--if ever-- grades cards himself. The seller is well-aware of his aggressiveness. The 29.99 start was just in case Pants would be the only bid--he'd still do well.

    As for this quote...

You're probably the same guy who lists this stuff as MINT! PSA! on eBay and when the card arrives it's a VG-EX card. I have broke at least TWENTY, 20, cases of racks from '86 for my set. I have two--TWO--truly MINT Danny Heep cards. They're just not that easy. Seems like everyone who has never spent any time on anything of recent vintage assumes they're easy and they have things like "slews" of them. Fact is--you likely don't. If you DO, I apologize. I have slews of Danny Heeps, too. Truly MINT ones, not so much...

If the guy has that much money to burn on a card, then I guess more power to him. Be happy for the seller!

  • Jordan,
The 86 Tiffany cards are comparatively simple to the regular issued cards. The price difference reflects that in a typical scenario. Generally, the cards in Tiffany sets START at NM/MT. Well-centered copies with sharp tips get 9's and perfectly centered cards get 10's. It's almost difficult to get NM 7's on those.
The regular issue of 86's START from packs in the EX 5- NM 7 range. The exceptional cards are 8's, the truly special cards are 9's and the mythical--seemingly shocking cards get 10's. I swear when you break hordes of 86's the 10's jump out of piles. It's like "Gosh are these gross...egads...BRUTAL...I can't believe I wasted my mon...YEAH BABY! Holy Smokes is that pretty!". It's almost a shame when it's Joe Orsulak, as it never seems to be Doc Gooden or Lenny Dykstra.
I remember when I pulled my Don Mattingly 10. I was like "The Gods are smiling".

NOTE: Still looking for Eric Davis!!!!!!!

I see Phil, Tiffany's limited print run is offset by the abundance of higher quality.

I have busted a rack case and a vending case of these and narrowed it down to about 10 that I thought were possible 10's. I know how tough these badboys are.

Funny regarding this discussion about 86 Topps. I was recently bidding on this auction for a PSA 10 '86 Clemens Tiffany, but it got out of hand and I gave up on it. Was really surprised that it actually went for this high of an amount, but I figured you could never get in the way of those crazy Set Registry collectors.

I think 5-9er was just having a bit of fun about the cards - you don't know what his ebay selling habits are? You would not like it if someone accused you of this?

ajetfan is a member here. he may can chime in on the starting prices of these 2 cards mentioned 29.99 heep and 49.99 carter. i've sold a few 86 gems and the 10s seem to do well. as for the 9s bringing this kind of bidding is odd, imo. if the bidder wants the card bad enough, he will get it. congratulations to ajetfan.

    Thanks,

You missed the point entirely. True, I would be upset if someone accused me of that, but I would NEVER say something like "I have slews of them".. .why make fun of the cards or someone's collecting interests? That's what he was doing and I take exception to people thinking those cards are that easy. They're only easy if you've never tried to find 'em.

Listen, not to start this tired old debate again, BUT, me being a collector of so called "modern" cards I can truly say that I would more than likely wipe my A$$ with said "vintage" cards before I dare defaced any of my MINT 78's or 80's and so on.

    Got it...

I don't think anyone should trivialize someones pursuit - altho I don't think that was his intent - the words can be construed in that direction.

    I see your point...

I feel like I'm in a Texas Holdem game....

    Dan

    I can tell ya...

My wife thinks it's all a waste a money!

But, of course spending buckets of dough on shoes, makeup, jewelry and hair is off the table for discussion!

I wish people would not take pot shots at the 70s and 80s cards since they are the sets I can truly identify with since I really understood baseball during that era.

Heck, the 78T set is one of my all-time favorites since the Yanks won a WS that year that looked out of the picture on the 8th of Aug!!!

    I like vintage, I like the 70s, I like the 21st century!
