Dont get too excited, it is only a temporary reprive...they are going back in for grading. The 1832 was already raw...1813 O-107a was in an NGC AU58 holder....1813 O-110 was in an old PCGS AU50 holder.

I grade the coins:

1813 O-107a: AU58
1813 O-110: AU53
1832 O-106: MS61

  • Gorgeous busties, John. I really like the die cracks on the first 1813 and the color of the second 1813.image

  • Truly lovely coins. I don't follow the busts, but after seeing your '32, I think I may have to start. It is very interesting how the dies changed over the years. The face on the '32 is smoother as is the cap. The stars are different too. (Of course I know I am not telling you anything, just realizing it for myself.) I fear, though, that I may not have the budget for collecting them. But I can still enjoy them when kind folks like you post images.

Thanks for posting and I hope you get the grades you are wanting.

  • Why do you grade the 1832 only MS61? If it has no wear I would think it was an MS65. It has really clean surfaces. Why are older coins not graded the same as, say, Morgans. If you compare this one to a Morgan with the same amounts of marks, the Morgan will be an MS66. image

Because the light cabinet friction will be taken into account...

The grade will be discounted that much for light cabinet friction? I caqn see one, maybe two points, but 3 or 4? That doesnt make sense to me.

How about you show us the reverses? From the pictures, I don't see 5 points difference in the 1813s.

No it doesn't make sense. I say this because if it does grade mint-state in reality they are not dropping the grade at all. IMO, it's an AU-58 coin that will sell for mint-state money. Hence, the services price them rather than grade them. So, they are actually bumping the grade up rather than down. That is if it indeed goes MS.

1832 looks AU58 to me...I don't know what kind of cabinet it was stored in for that image.

    Dicky,

To expound...the marks on the coin are very minimal but the luster is very subdued due to the originality of the coin. I actually think that the coin will grade somewhere between AU58 and MS63.

    We will see.

I like the first 1813 as PCGS AU55, AU58 on a lucky day. The second 1813 I still see as only about 3 points less than the first one, not the 5 points difference you see. You have the advantage of "in hand. They are both coins I would like to own, after PCGS does their thing.image

Let us know how you come out with PCGS.

  • Gee, that's too bad--I heard Laura Legend would pay anything for a 1813 graded at AU-58!!image
