Any good Coin Shops in Manhattan?

I am going to be going to Manhattan on a business trip a couple of days next week. Are there any good coin shops that I can visit while I am there? I'll be staying on Broadway. Thanks.

The best known coin shop is Stacks on 57th Street in Midtown Manhattan.

Although there are a couple of other coin shops in Manhattan, I've never heard anything about anyone visiting them.

If you want to see some really high-end coins in an old-fashioned environment, by all means, go to Stack's. (They also have a great book selection, so if there's anything uncommon you need for your library, ask them.)

I don't know if Smythe is set up for walk-in visitors, but they might be worth a visit.

Also, you probably don't want to miss either the ANS or the Federal Reserve Bank exhibit.

For a second I thought you were going to list Mark Feld and Todd Imhof again even though they can't be farther from NYC...they seem like the only dealers you ever recommend for anything remotely related to coins.

There are several dealers who are located on 45th Street in Midtown as well.

  • Yeah, try Stack's on 57th Street, and there's also Brigandi coins near Bryant Park (43rd Street & 6th). I was in there once...not too bad.

Yes- if you will be here over the weekend it would be worth it to rent a car & go to this. EASY to get to from the city as well. It starts at 9am. Maybe you could get a late
afternoon flight home. You won't be disappointed & you'll probably run into a few forum members as well.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

    OK, a bit of SSP...

Smythe has a small, minimally stocked gallery at its offices. Usually, it's best to call for an appointment so that we can bring requested types of material out from our back offices.

Also, we have a great auction on March 7. If you'll be in town before then, you should check it out.

I hope your reception at Stack's is better than mine was when I visited there back in the 90's. I wouldn't go back.

I have heard that Stack's can be somewhat intimidating if you have never been there before.

Care to share what happened when you went there that made you not want to go back?

Indifference. They apparently had better things to do in spite of the fact that I was the only customer in the store.
They showed me nothing. I had wanted to visit Stack's for 30 years and was very disappointed with my treatment.

That has been my experience as well, both in the store and on the phone. Not just once. They often have coins that interest me so I have continued to deal with them through the years and the difficult attitude has not changed.

I agree on Stacks... I have gone in a couple of time to the same reception... indifferent and uninterested. They seem to feel that serious collectors will attend their auctions and anyone off the street isn't a big money prospect. I wouldn't go back... though for the right coin, I would still bid in their auctions.
