1942/1-d Rip, Ripped, or fair price?(heard from NCS)

I paid $750 for this today, and just wondered how I did. The gunk on it appears to be dirt, which turned green in acetone. I was also wondering what it might grade and if I should send it to NCS.

  • You sure that green isn't PVC?

  • NCS it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Looks great except for the gunk.

I think you did okay, but I don't like the green stuff. It may keep the coin from grading out.

  • The gunk was black when I put it in acetone. I know very little about PVC, so I won't say it is or isn't. I took it out to photo it, and now it is going back in.

You probably were better off if you didn't clean it.

  • Without gunk what would you grade it? MS or AU

  • IMO, you did just fine regardless of the gunk, because the overdate is still what it is. I don't often agree with sending anything away to be messed with, but this is one case where I would consider the same thing.
  • I agree with deputypud. How can you go wrong with an overdate with that much detail. Look at those bands! If there is a way to "conserve" that green stuff off of the coin, you're looking at a $1300-$2000 coin.
  • The gunk seems to be coming off slowly in acetone.

Acetone is a good idea, looks like the gunk is in a good spot, just be patient with it, good luckimage----BigE

    Let it "cook" for awhile.

NCS is where you should go if ya can't remove the stuff.

That is a rare and collecable specimen, and well worth the money.

Why send it to NCS? Acetone should remove any PVC residue without damage to the coin.

  • I'm willing to bet that's PVC.

Leave it in the acetone as long as needed with the occasional swirl around. Seal it in a jar with the acetone.

If you're lucky you may still get an MS grade out of it.

I'd say you got a deal.

I'd have jumped at it at that price, even with the gunk.

I agree, it looks like PVC, leave it in the acetone.

I've seen a lot worse looking than that at coin shows for a lot more money than you paid for that one.

  • I can offer you a profit on the coin. If I were you to send the coin to NCS for conservation. The coin probably wont make it into an NGC holder but an NCS holders do very well in a Heritage or Teletrade sale.

Make sure to pour off the acetone a couple of times and replace it with fresh clean acetone to keep the dissolved gunk from redepositing as a residue on the rest of the coin.
  • Thanks for the advice. How long should I give it before I give up and send it in?

Can you take a close up pic of the "gunk"

  • I'll try to get a close up with my microscope.

if you don't want it, it would fit in my 7070..... (nobody says it can't be an error in that slot, eh ?)

....but I want a discount ! Now it's got two errors. One from the mint, another from the owner image

why dip it ? leave it with it's gunk and crud and crap on it.... pass it around the mechanic's shop for a few days and let it be what it is without the doctoring....sheesh you guys !

I could be wrong so please correct me if I am, but it appears to me to be corrosion. If removed it would damage the coin further leaving pitts etc. I do not think NSC would work on this coin.

    Other than that nice coin!

  • I can't say that you are wrong, but I can hope. I did notice the difference from yesterday at the top right of the Y and it looks promising.

  • I sent it yo NCS today. It was getting too hard to resist trying my own methods. Out of sight out of mind. Thanks to everyone here for the advice.

Well that's much safer.... it's an awesome coin, isn't it ? I got my first one when I was thirteen in change while collecting for the Omaha World Herald (around 1968) ... it's long been gone image.. but man oh man, what a coin, huh ?

I still like the 'passing it around the mechanics shop' idea ...natural circulating condition (black gunk all in the devices, legends , hair.... you know that look !

I just got off the phone with NCS they gave it an "improperly cleaned unc details" I didn't see any cleaning, but that dosen't mean it isn't there.
I also sent an 1894 Morgan(thought it was XFish) came back as a circulated proof. Not a good day for me.

  • Not a good day? Why would that be?
  • mcmximcmxi Posts: 890
The value of an 1894 proof is about half of an MS

  • Well, I don't know what you paid for the dollar, so if you paid good XF money for it, then I guess the day wasn't the best on that piece. But knowing what you paid for the overdate, I still say you did just fine, cause it is what it is.
  • carlcarl Posts: 2,054
I have to agree with most of the others that regardless of any grading service you did just great. I hit coin shows 2 times a Month and you did great price wise. Your only mistake was sending to anyone. You could have just kept it in your collection and been really super happy.

There's still the mechanic's shop idea image ...

what will they call it after it's all dirty ? IMPROPERLY HANDLED ?
  • That green guck doesn't bother me at all. Looks natural. That is a nice coin, with nice Full Bands. I would have paid double probably, but that's me! Good job.

  • Despite NCS calling it "improperly cleaned", if they got the green stuff off, and it does not look like it was cleaned, give PCGS a shot.

    Don't sell yourself short.....

You have taken a rare and collectable coin...and made
    the decision to conserve it.

    I would do that...any time...any day.

It will survive us and be enjoyed by future collectors.

Nothing, in my opinion, is more noble.

  • That is not gunk on that coin, that is Alien Vomit. Or It could be Martian Poop. Nice Coin though well worth the money. Great Buy.
