Harsh grading on some pretty rare stuff

1 31475241 1962 SHIRRIFF COINS 40 BROOKS ROBINSON N/A 7
2 31475242 1962 SHIRRIFF COINS 41 MICKEY MANTLE N/A 7
3 31475243 1962 SHIRRIFF COINS 111 ED MATTHEWS (MATHEWS) 7
4 31475244 1962 SHIRRIFF COINS 151 RED SCHOENDIENST N/A 7
5 31475245 1962 SHIRRIFF COINS 165 FRANK ROBINSON N/A 8

The Mathews came right out of the original celllo wrapper with no nicks or scratches on either side, so that 7 is ridiculous.

Mantle is very tough to find in any condition, here's what this one looked like before I sent it...

The others looked equally nice... totally absurd, it shows a complete lack of understanding of the Shirriff coin issue by whoever graded these.

Let's see - oh yeah, #314 graded those. Sorry about the 7s.

    I like that Mantle!

However, would a grader of CARDS really grade COINS? It would seem that the numbers are not based on who the grader is, but something else...

    Josh

I got no point of reference? I don't have any or have handled any.

    Have ya got any 9s?

How about the 8? Do ya have a scan of that one?

The Mantle looks great - I do see some white in the edges of the coin? Is that scuffing/wear or natural to the coin.

    Sorry you're disappointed.

Does that # actually indicate a specific grader?

I thought I read somewhere that it was not true?

    Just curious

I did fine with 314 , granted most were recent cards. I can't complain with seven 10's out of twenty cards

Guys, I think it's been posted a bunch of times, but thee "314" is not a specific grader, it's just the numbers assigned. I think someone asked Carol and she confirmed that.

Perhaps the Shirriff Potato Chips Coin had "bag marks" (pun intended)

Had to get that pun in, but sorry you were disappointed with the grades.

I just noticed that the picture and even the style of the back is the same as the 1962 Salada Junket Coins.
I just listed a recently graded Mickey Mantle PSA NM-MT 8 1962 Salada Junket,
and a PSA NM 7 1963 Mickey Mantle Salada Junket All Star COIN.
Also a Hartland Mickey Mantle from the 1950's.

Looks like they were probably made by the same company.

The corners look rounded and the cut is rough on the sides.

Thats the only i can think of for the low grades.

Does look as though you got a raw deal - seems nicer than a 7 to me. Those white edges are due to light reflection off the plastic in the scan, you see the same effect on "real (metal) coins.
