These are all crack and resubmits from a previous 314... grader order. All of these cards were 9's previously, except for the Junior Felix, which went from 8 --> 10. The Carlos Garcia is notoriously difficult to find in any grade.

My prayers not to receive 314... on this sub were answered!!

Couldn't have been the same card. PSA is *always* consistent image

  • Congrats - way to go, Josh!! That was certainly well worth the effort!

I just sent in 2 seperate subs, hoping that they split them up and at least one gets by #314. image

When I submitted the Junior Felix the first time, I knew it was a 10. It truly is a near-perfect card. I couldn't believe when it came back an 8. And now my thoughts are confirmed!

    Thanks for everybody's kind words
  • I had a BGS 9.5 cross to a PSA 8, which I then cracked and it came back a PSA 10. I also cracked out a BGS 9 and it crossed to a PSA 7. I was THRILLED with that one

That's crazy. I don't think the difference in an 8 and a 10 is tremendous in many instances.

Is this further evidence that "314" is a tough grader? I am not sure. However, it is interesting to note
that the last 4 1984 Fleer Update Roger Clemens PSA 9 have sold for:

    $350.09
    $345.00
    $347.00
    $399.99 via BIN

and that this auction for the same card with the serial number "31435080" is currently at $500.00 with
18 hours left in the auction.

1984 Fleer Update Roger Clemens PSA 9

I suppose $500.00 would be a great price if you knew you could crack it out and resubmit it with a pretty
good chance of getting a PSA 10 (and sell it for over $1000.00).

That Clemens will not come back a 10. T/B is out of 10's range.

  • There is no way in hell that the Clemens would come back a 10, even if submitted numerous times. It is definitely sitting southwest in terms of centering.

I've learned not to overestimate PSA's grading abilities. Do I think that Clemens will come back a 10? No. Would I be terribly surprised if it did? No.

As for the Junior Felix 8 going to a 10, JMB and I have discussed quite a few times. PSA really has no clue on how to grade refractors. When I say they have no clue, I mean they're so inconsistent that getting the grade you want is really a matter of resubmitting. Today's 8 is tomorrow's 10 and today's 10 can be tomorrow's 8. This wouldn't be that big a deal if not for the wildly different prices a PSA 8 and a PSA 10 commands on Ebay. PSA's inability to grade refractors is terrific if you're taking advantage of some people on the Set Registry who collect the labels more so than the cards.

People like Weigle and Kent want to pay $1,000 for a PSA 10 that was a PSA 8 just two weeks ago? We'd all do it in a heartbeat. One small transaction can pay for 50 raw refractors to play around with.

    This is very funny.

BUT....For the record, let me say that Joe Kent is a good friend and has a really good business head on his shoulders. We spoke today about their inconsistency of grading in regards to the Junior Felix.

Some day, I think Joe's set will be worth a relatively large fortune, as an all-PSA 10 set of the most prolific and popular set in the modern era...

DBH actually referred to Joe Kent in a previous post; I was answering that. I don't think I've ever dealth with DBH (except on here, of course).

Are you Josh that gosteelers refers to in the mail thread? I am kind of interested in a 93 Griffey refractor? Any chance you have an extra lying around?

When I said "take advantage," I don't mean sucker or anything derogatory. I meant take advantage as in take advantage of a good selling opportunity if you had a piece of real estate. Nothing wrong with selling to people who are willing to pay top prices. That's just being a smart seller.

I would have to disagree on your assessment of Joe's PSA 10 1993 Finest refractor collection being worth a large fortune down the road. When he finishes the set, he and Weigle will have put more cash into a 1993 finest refractor set than ANYONE in the history of the set. Basically because they both want to be the first to 100% completion. When those two are out of the way and the 10s continue to make their way into pop reports, the prices will keep falling. The same thing that happened to the PSA 9 1993 finest refractor market will happen to PSA 10, and I don't have to tell you how many 10s PSA has handed out in 1993 finest refractors in the last year and change.

Yep, that's me! Right now, I have only a PSA 10. I traded my PSA 9 to gosteelers recently. I'll keep my eyes peeled for ya.
  • I once sumitted a grouping of 1959 football card that were all graded Psa 8. I resubmitted the nicest 5 and three came back as straight nines.

Pretty good racket for CU, have cards submitted multiple times. What a great way to generate additional revenue. It's really to bad that this practice is so prevalent, seems to me CU would like to grade the cards properly the first time to eliminate any appearance of undergrading just to generate additional fees.

I asked this earlier, being a newbie, how far off are the pop reports due to the resubmission of numerous cards?

    Thanks in advance,

    Peace

I would say that the pop of 8's is WAY off. 9's probably aren't too skewed.

I thought we had debunked the whole 314 "grader of death" idea? I do think that some graders are tougher than others, but the 314 cert has nothing to do with a particular grader. Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Carol respond to this before?

  • fiveninerfiveniner Posts: 4,109 ✭✭✭
Hmm if 314 is so a particular grader then he can grade my subs.I have made out good with the so called grader 314.

I would think the worst part of the cracking-n-resubmit it that is really messes up the pop. report on the 8's & 9's doesn't it? How do you really know what the pops. are?? Do you guys send in the old labels when you crack them so PSA can update the pop. reports???

PSA is, at best, inconsistent on accepting and actually adjusting the pop. reports if you crack cards out and send them in.

At worst - PSA could potentially 'flag' certain submitters as crack and submit specialists and perhaps take a finer eye to submissions from them.

At any rate, free market rules, right? The Pop. report is a guide, and a guide only, as to the relative scarcity of a card. At the end of the day - if enough set/player/type builders want a card - it will be bid up to it's 'fair' price anyway.

I wish your comment was true, this one "At worst - PSA could potentially 'flag' certain submitters as crack and submit specialists and perhaps take a finer eye to submissions from them."

If the card is a 9 three times, why the hell should it ever be a 10.
