Ocean View Coin Covers selling for over a $100 on Ebay

Could this be the major sleeper of the entire Westward Journey series? Holy cowimage Dealers just didn't buy them apparently, and since only 23k were sold, I assume that they almost all went to coin cover collectors who bought one or two, so I imagine the price potential on these is huge. The 2004 Westward Journey Coin and Medal Set was limited to 25k, but most were bought by dealersspeculators, and they are mighty expensive. This might be the one to watchimage Damn I wish I would have bought 100 of them when I could! Rats(*&^%^&*(

  • The mint could very well resume sales of existing stock later this year. What will that do to the price? I sold the few I had, while the getting is good.

  • I guess if Congress acts on the changing the law then yes. The production was limited to 50k, so it would make them less rare because the dealers would line up to buy them. But from what I've heard, it is unlikely that Congress will act on it, as well as the fact that Ocean View Nickel Rolls, Silver Proof Sets, and the Westward Journey Nickel Series sets were indeed sellouts at the last minute before sales were closed on Dec. 25th. This would only leave the coin covers and nickel bags (the bags don't sell in high quantities anyway), so I don't think Congress will amend the law to sell remaining coin covers and Ocean View Bags, especially in a tumultuous election year. I think this is the way it's going to stay, but I could be wrong.

That's what I really hate about these extremely limited editions -- speculators and quick-buck artists tend to shut out the collectors and leave a lot of people with a bad taste in their mouths about the process.

That's why these Ocean View Coin Covers are going to benefit the collectors who bought them. The dealers DIDN'T buy them and now you have to buy one from a collector who has an extra laying around. I bought mine when people couldn't give them away just because I like the Westward Journey coin covers and I knew the Ocean View had lowest production, so I bought some extra for keepsake knowing they would be hard to get in the future. I suspect that 98% of the people who own them bought just one or 2 from the Mint and opened them and broke the seal, leaving hardly any on the market that were sealed. I think this factor will drive prices really high in the long-term, especially after the Mint releases the 2006 Return to Monticello cover on March 28th. People are going to want to complete their sets, and the Ocean View will be the "key date" so to speak.

These were available for many months. If you didn't buy, it's your own fault. There was no quick sell out.
I always thought they were kind of cool, first day strikes, but nobody else seemed to interested, so I forgot about them.

Of course I'm kicking my self now, because I seem to underestimate the stupidity of the consumer. I need to be more agressive in my purchases so I can finance my coin addiction. image
