Anyone wanna Help me grade my 1830 Boliva 4 Soles

Coin looks much better in person, sometimes scans don't do well.
But by what you see, what grade do you think it is?

These were somewhat crudely manufactured, so it could be anywhere from VF to AU. Very hard to tell without seeing coin in hand. Also, without seeing true coloring/lustre, it's tough to tell if it has been cleaned or not (most have been at some point). I don't like the 2 scratches (in the field to the right of the nose, and to the left of the epaulette (sp?) on the shoulder).

My guess is AU50 on that piece, due to the extreme lack of wear on the high points on the obverse (face and epaulets) and reverse.

    Great coin!

I pretty much agree with Jester, AU-50 or AU-53.

I would have to say EF.

That's awfully good detail remaining on the obverse (chest) and reverse (grass)... solid AU to me....

It is a very weak strike.

  • It is a bit tricky to tell from the photos, even if the photos are pretty good.
The scratches do detract a bit, I'd say XF to maybe AU.
The fine details are there, that helps a lot.

The coin has amazing detail for the issue. It's not so much a soft strike as it is very crude design. Most of these coins are so crude they aren't even round! Anyway, look how much detail it has! The front of Bolivar's suit has full detail, as does the rest of his uniform and collar, and ribbon tying the laurel wreath together, etc etc. This is one of sharpest strikes I've seen on these issues, and nearly no wear at all. I concure with the fossilized skeleton, and would say it's more likely an AU53.

Looks at least 58, more likely 62. Great series to collect, especially by die variety. What a lifetime project that would be!

I really do not like the surfaces and fields of the coin... while the strikes on this series leaves alot to be desired... AU 58 tops.
