found 2 out of three open for business. Spent some time looking through the inventory of both open shops hunting for:
1. raw MS Lincolns of various dates from 1934-1982 at low prices to put into a Dansco Album I am filling; and
2. CAM/DCAM 1950-1970 Proof and SMS coins, particularly "Black and White" halves for 1955, 1959, 1961 and 1966 that would be upgrades to current coins I have of these dates.
No Lincolns were found that I liked and there were not very many available anyway.
As for the proof and mint sets, I looked through a lot of them from 1950-1970. Many of them had coins that had frosted devices and decent mirrors, however none of them grabbed me except one. I guess I am getting more and more picky as I get more and more experience in hunting down these coins. The one coin that did grab me was a 1955 half. It is in a Capital holder. I have been looking to upgrade my current 55 for a long time. My current 55 does not have deep mirrors and thick evenly frosted devices on both sides. The half I saw today is killer DCAM on the obverse, though it has light haze on it. The haze mutes the clouds the DCAM look but does not hide it. The reverse has much heavier haze on it and it hides the mirrored fields to the extent that I can not really tell how good or bad the fields are. As for the reverse devices, nice even frost is present, buth the haze also hides how heavy the frost is. The obverse and reverse haze is of the type that I have seen before and is of the type I have successfully removed before. The store is a combo coin and jewelry store and on Wednesday's the coin guy is not there. I asked the jewelry guy to set the 1955 set aside on the coin guy's desk and have him call me tomorrow to discuss price. I think I will buy the set if the price is right (i.e. bid) and take a shot at giving the half a bath. I will either be ecstatic with a 55 DCAM half cherry pick [which will quickly take up residence in a Capital Holder with its 13 brothers) or will be the owner of another ho hum CAM half.
It was nice to spend a couple of hours snooping this afternoon and it was nice to find a 55 half with DCAM potential. I only wish that I could find 59, 61 and 66 DCAM halves in OGP sets that I can buy at bid. Will keep trying though and one of these days I will succeed.
