Hi gang. I've been a longtime lurker and thought it was time to jump in. I collect mostly pre-1980 baseball. My CFO (wife) severly hampers my spending urges, which probably is best. I have been slowly working on 74 and 75 raw sets for the past few years by scouring ebay. In spite of her best efforts though, I have been successful in sneaking a few other cards under the radar . The cycle goes: she threatens to cut me off, and I point out the investment potential, then she points out that I would let the house be foreclosed on before I would consider selling a card. Sound familiar?
Cheers,
Nick

Welcome!! Yeah, you'll fit right in here with our little "support group". There's no such thing as self-control and we encourage more collecting. It's so much fun! I have a severe bout of card envy with each new scan that's posted - and then I head over to Ebay...

Welcome to the boards Nick!!!!
My wife doesn't care about my card lust
But my concience keeps kickin the crap outta me !!!
See ya around
For the love of the game
And the cards that go with it
Were the '74s and '75s your first sets when you began collecting? The 70s in general are a big black hole in my card collecting experience due to being in the service, working and partying as a single guy in Denver, CO, and then finally college. I picked up the collecting bug again in '81.
I really appreciate the posts and pics of those 70s sets. I'd have to say the one card I'd like to buy -- thanks to discussions and scans here -- is the '71 Munson. That's a classic card!
Hope to learn some from you, too!

You'll fit in really good here!
I always tell my wife the truth, even when I'm lying! Now, she's threatened me with bodily harm! And she's 4 inches taller than me! So, there's a "restraining order" on my computer - NO EBAY!!!
If left to me, we'ld be sleeping under the I-10 off ramp at the 410 interchange! So this is a good thing.
I see a nice T206 - are you collecting them also? Very ambitious set.
The only thing I'm collecting right now is dust!
BTW, if you're looking for a really cool modern set - the 06 Topps Heritage with the 57T design is kick butt!! We'll be doing a lot of trading here to make sure everyone completes the set with SP's.
So, good luck and please, don't let your wife talk to mine!
your friend

Thanks for the advice Matt. Hoof, I have a similar black hole, ETS, after stop loss, 2004 95b AKA 31B (no regrets).

<< <i>I haven't figured out how to quote a message yet, but I agree that the '71 Munson is a classic card. I started a side project of classic catcher cards because catcher cards seem to reflect not only the action of baseball but also the evolution of baseball technology:

Neat idea. Wish they had their mitts showing in that sequence of catcher cards, too...
Thanks for sharing!

I was a simple MP in the Army who got out prior to retirement. Considering that you were an 11B, we swallowed some of the same sand/dirt at Benning, I was only there for 3 weeks for jump school.

Ha! First I thought you two were talking stocks, or something. Being in the USAF, we had AFSCs (Air Force Specialty Codes) I think it was. Mine was 31651L -- Air-to-air Missile Guidance and Control System Specialist -- or something to that effect. We were nicknamed "Missile Pu$$ies". It's only been 30 years ago this June since I was discharged after a fun 4 year "career", including 11 partying months in Ubon, Thailand. Here's me in Ubon, outside of our missile shop, with more hair and less gut than I've got now:
So, what DOES "ETS, after stop loss, 2004 95b AKA 31B" represent for us Fly Boys??

Nick-

Hi Nick and to the boards.
I'm luck I guess, my wife is pretty supportive of my hobby as I am with her Scrapbooking and Crafting.
Good Luck with your collecting.

Also, a quick count-- does anyone else here see a series of military acronyms and numbers and have absolutely no idea what they mean? It's a little embarrassing, since I'm a pretty well rounded guy (in both the intellectual and physical senses, if I must be honest), but I see that military shorthand and it might as well be in Korean.
