Grade this Hairyhead... large images...

I am stumped on this one.... It has very solid luster and the fields are flawless to the eye with some die polishing..... however Kennedys head/hair detail is weak... I am guessing that the master die in 1971
is the reason, as it got worn, details were lost. Which is what happened to the Franklins as the fifties progressed....

However I am out of my area of expertise and I do not know all the nuasances of the Kennedy buisness strike issues.....

This is a nice coin, also notice the die crack on the 'T'....

This coin is a homerun in a ms68, ok in a ms67, not worth submitting in a ms66.......

Weak strike will limit this coin to a 67, IMHO. I will wait to see what the experts say...Mike

MS66..... I like that die crack!
  • If the strike was stronger I would go 67... but the lack of detail in the hair and on the eagle's head and shield are too much... I say 65... and barely pushing 66 on a lucky day.

I say 65 because of the mark on JFK's cheek and the hit on the '1' in 1971

  • There is a strong mint state presence on this Kennedy half Lucy...........But ......a lot of missing detail as you can see.
    My guess.....ms63...........

Even the best struck of these aren't really very crisp. This was the first year they were striking the coin in nickel clad and, since it's much harder than the 40% and 90% silver of previous years, these tend to be pretty weak. This one, though, looks like a very late die state. I can't see it doing better than MS65 even as clean as it is.
