An upgrade to my USA-Philippines Type Set - Grade posted

I have a nice USA-Philippines Type Set entered in the Registry across the street. About a week and a half ago I received some USA-Philippines coins I had sent to NGC for grading and have just finished replacing the 1936 Murphy-Quezon Fifty Centavos coin in my registry set with this pretty one that I'd sent in for grading:

Here's an image of the NGC MS65 coin that I replaced:

Without looking at my registry set, any guesses as to the grade of the new coin? Also, which coin do you prefer? I'll post the grade later.

From the photos, your former coin looks like it may be a bit more lustrous. However, your new peso certainly has more eye appeal, particularly the reverse. It also appears to have a slightly sharper strike. I'll call it a 65 as well.

Hi Mr USAROk, They both look great, however your 'new' coin looks like a better strike. For the present time, I am stuck with the complete set of salvaged coins.......almost meltable.............nice coins............Rick

The new Fifty Centavos graded MS64 at NGC which was a bit of a suprise since it was technically nicer than the NGC MS65 coin and had better eye appeal. Anyway, I did what any good registry competitor would do and have replaced the MS65 I had in the set with the MS64 that I like better.

64 is a bit harsh. You were knocked off for the subdued luster and the bag marks on the reverse. Otherwise, a great coin!

I like the replacement far more than the earlier one. I believe the new one has excellent luster, albeit satiny. I don't know why they'd downgrade for satiny luster???? After all, it's original too. image Perhaps they're in the middle of a "grade-tightening" mood. The new coin also has fantastic strike, and I feel it has fewer distracting marks than the earlier one, even on the reverse. I'd give it a solid 66.

1jester is correct regarding the luster. The new MS64 50 Centavos coin is quite lusterous but it is a satiny luster. Both coins are nice, but I have no doubt as to which is nicer and truely expected that it would grade a high MS65. No matter the grade, it's the coin for my collection and registry set.

The first coin is much nicer than the second coin.

  • Dear USAROK. Congratulations on a nice upgrade. I actually like both the coins. Both coins look like they have their original skins, but the first one has a lot more chatter on the reverse than the original.

Dear Mr. Filam Coins: Am glad you seem to have gotten through the attempted coup d'etat safely.
    Them's were exciting times.

I was returning to the hotel on foot from a friend's apartment when all hell broke loose. From the tv's in the sidewalk shops we knew the coup d'etat was on and that it was right in front of the hotel on Ayala and perhaps also Makati Avenue. So we walked down side streets and alleys, and when we came to the river were afraid to cross on the Makati Avenue Bridge.

So we walked away from the bridge until we came to a ferry (2 pesos). Crossed there. Continued on side streets and alleys, and as we approached the hotel, heard gunfire a few blocks away on Ayala.

Amazingly, we arrived at the hotel without incident. Went upstairs and from a well-placed window watched the cops charge peaceful demonstraters armed with huge shields and nasty clubs.

Now I'm in Hong Kong and comfie all over again.

Great to see you. THat was another great night and am really, really glad you got some nice schtuff.

Warm regards from safe, solid, and sound Hong Kong

JHF, I'm glad you escaped by the skin of your teeth!!

About the coins, some people have said that the new replacement coin has significantly more chatter on the reverse than the original one. I'm sorry, but I simply don't see this. Sure, I see some very minimal and unobtrusive chatter on the new coin, but I see just as much if not more chatter on the older one. However, the older one hides its chatter very well due to the thicker "skin" and toning, as well as the camera angle; but it's got loads of chatter, and to my eye much more chatter than the new one! The new one has no toning for chatter to hide under. I agree that both have original skins. I prefer the look of the new acquisition.

Justhavingfun and FilamCoins: I am glad to hear that you have both made it through a tense situation. Funny how the writeup in USATODAY never mentioned any gunfire!

1jester: You have described my feelings regarding the 2 coins perfectly. Both are nice but the MS64 is nicer. Each has a nearly mark free obverse; good luster, although the MS64 has a satiny luster and the MS65 a shinier luster; and both have original skin. The real difference between the two technically and in eye appeal is on the reverse where I beleive the MS64 wins hands down. In hand the hits on the reverse of the MS64 are much lighter and there are a few less than on the MS65. Also, in my opinion, the toning on the reverse of the MS65 doesn't really enhance it's eye appeal, it just subdues some of the hits. That's why my registry set now contains the MS64 and my oldest son, who has started to collect the USA-Philippines series too, will soon have the MS65.

  • Oooops. I miswrote. Got the two coins mixed up. I agree with both the Jester, Coin Cat, Ajaan, and USAROK -- the MS64 looks like the nicer coin to me, too. It's the 65 that has the more chatter.

Sorry about that and my apologies.

Ooof!! I thought I was going crazy for a while....image JHF, I thought from what you were saying that you were accidentally describing the wrong coin.

Both are really nice coins, in fact!

I lived through a coup d'etat when I lived in Thailand. Interesting times.
