Been looking for this for a while

As many of you know the 1966 Irish Pearse 10 Shillings commemoratives are fairly common, especially on ebay.
50,000 proofs were struck and 2 million uncirculated issues of which at least 1.25 million were melted.
What I hadn't seen until the other day was an original 2 piece proof set. What makes it interesting is that this coin bears an edge inscription: EIRI AMAC NA CASCA 1916 -or- "The Easter Rising 1916." There are two main varieties. The difference lies in the direction of the writing. One goes clock wise, one counter clockwise. The two piece set should contain each variety!

On another note.........there are two sub-varieties, considered errors, again related to the description. Instead of the above inscription the errors would read with NACASCA or with NASCA. They carry a small premium and I am actively seeking both. At this time I do not know if the error varieties exist in the uncirculated issues? image
Everything I write is my opinion.

Looking for alot of crap.

  • I recently picked up a nice clean UNC one of these.

I would love to have a set of the Proofs, however, they are way out of my budget range. image

These two coin proofs sets are becoming extremely hard to find now days. I only have the single proof in box I can never seem to catch the set. I am very happy you could snag one up! Errors with the words NACASCA or with NASCA have been found among regular, non-proof issues but are rare. Again, a seller on ebay a few months back was offering a set with the NACASCA/NASCA errors in a non-proof strike. There are also non-proof issues of these coins with the lettering going in opposite directions and I have a a pair of these.

Another error I've heard of but have never seen is the concave striking of the coin. As you know these coins are struck slightly concave but there are errors were these coins are struck completely flat or have too much of a concave surface. As far as other errors on these coins I have no idea.
  • Micheal,

Thanks for the info. on the uncirculated varieties. So I guess there are at least 8 varieties in total, maybe as many as 12 between the proofs and uncirculated.
    Here's what I've compiled:

    1. PROOF - correct inscription, clockwise Exists **IN MY HOLDINGS**
    2. PROOF - correct inscription, counter clockwise Exists
    3. PROOF - NACASCA, clockwise May exist
    4. PROOF - NACASCA, counter clockwise May exist - at least one of #3 and 4 exist
    5. PROOF - NASCA, clockwise May exist
    6. PROOF - NASCA, counter clockwise May exist - at least one of #5 and 6 exist

    7. UNCIRCULATED - correct inscription, clockwise Exists **IN MY HOLDINGS**
    8. UNCIRCULATED - correct inscription, counter clockwise Exists
    9. UNCIRCULATED - NACASCA, clockwise May exist
    10. UNCIRCULATED - NACASCA, counter clockwise May exist - at least one of #9 and 10 exist
    11. UNCIRCULATED - NASCA, clockwise May exist
    12. UNCIRCULATED - NASCA, counter clockwise May exist - at least one of #11 and 12 exist

If anyone wants to report on whether they have any of the above let me know or post it. Perhaps we can do some real numismatics here and learn exactly what was made and what wasn't.
