  • You are in luck because on this forum we have THE expert on Goetz, these very designs have been shown here by him. I'm sure when cacheman reads this he will fill you in on the particulars.

Even if I had an informed opinion, shep is right:

    Yo MrSpud...

    1 K-156 Authentic
    2 British copy
3 K-262 Looks authentic but would need size in mm's to be sure, only because of graininess on the Reverse
    4 K-274 Authentic

    Thanks guys! image

Thanks! The third one measures 60 mm using a ruler. I have a set of calipers at work, I'll bring them home and take a more precise measurement tonight.

That's a close enough measurement, It's real. They all, with the exception of the copy, look like great examples with wonderful patina too. These are some of his most popular, and hence, most available pieces, but still a nice find.

I'm pleased to say that I made guesses before I looked at Soctt's post, and we agreed.

Thanks, most appreciated image . By the way, for the fun of it I went ahead and measured the 3rd one with the calipers. It is 58.4708 mm.

They should be 58mm. They can be a tad smaller but you want to aim for 58mm or larger for the satiricals. Anything smaller than 57mm is usually a forgery/recast...

Thanks, that is excellent information image . Perhaps I'll start packing my calipers into my backpack when I attend coin shows.

I hope they're plastic calipers...you don't want to be using the metal ones. Other good attributes are the obvious nice applied patina likr the ones you have shown, and a crisp and clear cast...you don't want anything mushy looking.

Thanks, yes the calipers are plastic image .

There is not much that I can add, but I will say this:

The British copy of the German Lusitania medal is quite historic itself. It was issued to show that the Germans were celebrating the sinking of the great Cunard liner and thus stir public opinion during WWI. Sometimes you will find one with the original box.
