The "Grader of Death?"

I've been wondering if the first 3 digits really correspond with a grader. I was checking out cert numbers on the cert lookup, and it looks like 314 is a direct continuation of 313, which is a continuation of 312, etc. Basically, the 31400000 and 31399999 certs seem to be part of the same submission, the 31300000 and the 31299999 certs seem to be part of the same submission, and so on through 30000000. There is no 29999999 certs yet.

So, has anyone who's been getting stuff graded by PSA for a while noticed unusually harsh grading with any certs starting with numbers between 300 and 313?

Also, check out cert 00000000. What's that?

    copied from a different thread:

    Guys -

Per Carol, the certification numbers have nothing to do with the grader. They are assigned before the cards enter the grading phase. She said Joe O. explains this process in the PSA video that can be found on this site.

yep. the cert i believe will only tell when a card was graded. not by whom.

I had a recent submission that the certs started with 314 and thought it was very liberally graded.

Always looking for Topps Salesman Samples, pre '51 unopened packs, E90-2, E91a, N690 Kalamazoo Bats, and T204 Square Frame Ramly's

  • I had two recent "314" submissions. I found that the vintage cards were accurate to overgraded and the modern cards were accurate to undergraded.
  • And yet, if we destroy this myth of the 314 grader of death, how will we ever be able to accept those 10's that come back as 9's, those 9's that come back as 8's, etc.....

Personally, I want someone to blame it on. image
