Target toning...is this example real or AT

I love this coin. Probably cleaned long ago but did it album tone or was it a dctors work. I'm no expert.

  • I'm hoping it was natural...... why would anyone want to touch a coin like that and mess it up *sigh*

It looks like attractive and natural album toning which occurred over a long period of time after a dipping or cleaning.

That was my thought as well. From the pics in the first post, I would say dipped and album retone.

I think that is a beautiful coin with a natural tone going on. No problem with that sucker.

Wayte Raymonds are known for album toning a lot.
Certain Whitmans (with the sliders) and others do as well.
Sulfur content and the way the paper was processed seems to have a lot to do with it (as long as storage conditions (ie...humidity))

  • Thats a pretty coin. Worse case it was cleaned long ago and retoned naturally.

I think this coin was circulated until about 1830, and then set aside. About 1950 somebody noticed it and cleaned it up a bit. Then it was placed in an album where it toned as you see it now.

Personally, I would not buy such a costly coin unless it was encapsulated by PCGS/NGC/ANACS/ICG.

My guess is the seller wants about $600 because of the pretty toning, and the fact that PCGS does not encapsulate many 1806s compared to NGC. I would rather have this PCGS VF25 holder than NGC VF30. A lot of people think NGC bumps grades up a notch for pretty toning. This coin certainly looks better than the vast majority of VFs for sale these days.

I think it is O-116 R3, but then, I don't often attribute Draped series.

That's what you get after a lightly cleaned coin is placed in an album for a long time. Although at first I thought coins like this were very pretty, I'm not really a fan of that look. I like my color to have luster in it.... color on dead surfaces just doesn't do it for me.

I have to agree with tradedollarnut- I'm not a fan of old bust coinage that has unnaturally white centers with color on the rims- I'd rather see old dark crust, but I'm weird like that....

  • Yeah, yeah, thast where I found it. Anaconda. I like the crusty originals and these toners. Cool site that anaconda. If you blow up the pics of this bust the colors really pop.

This is a very interesting thread, for multiple reasons. Can't believe I totally missed it.
  • Am I missing something? I'm new to the boards and recently discovered anaconda coins....is it fishy because of the peace dollar thread?
