crackout or crossover?

I was wondering what difference it would make if you submitted a coin in a PCI or SEGS or some other grader's holder to PCGS if it would get the same grade as if you just cracked it out and submitted it raw.

I know the obvious answer is the coins grade is the coins grade. But I would think it human nature to consider the packaging if the coin came in another's holder. Anyone thought about this? Or better yet, has anyone submitted a coin in another holder, had it reholdered and graded by PCGS, then cracked it out of the PCGS holder to resubmit and see if it came back with the same grade? The experiment would be worth the grading fee I think.

My initial thoughts are that submitting in another's holder would give you a better chance of a lower grade.

one has to wonder if selecting the choice of cross at any grade
or cross at the same or higher grade would also play a role?

if you are confident why say cross at any grade? would that add
any bias? or the graders simply do not know or care?
  • I am wondering the same thing. I have an 1921 S ANACS MS64 Morgan that looks flawless. It has the best strike I have seen on a 1921 S. I wish it was in a PCGS holder. I know it would have a greater value. It may even have shot at a MS65. The problem is risking a lower grade by PCGS. I know PCGS occasionally comes out with some insanley conservative grades. I cannot risk my 1921 S comming back a PCGS MS63. Which could happen considering PCGS. If I crack out the coin PCGS could grade the same, higher or unfortunatley lower. If I crack out the coin I also risk PCGS body bagging the thing for some reason. Is it worth the risk by craking out? Would it be safest to cross the coin and accept nothing less than MS64? I guess if it dosnt cross I am still left with my original ANACS MS64. Although if I do this I end my chances at a PCGS MS65. This hobby is going to kill me.

The graders don't see the submission sheet, so they wouldn't know what min. grade you put. As far as the holder question, I don't know what goes through their minds. The coin is what it is and should be graded accordingly.

I think your answer is easy - you stand to lose about $100 if it downgrades (well, less if it BBs), but $1200 if it upgrades! I would definately take those odds! Crack it and send it, keep the ANACS holder and send it back to ANACS if there is a problem, you can claim you stepped on it. image

If the coin is all there for the current/assigned grade, I think you're better off cracking it out and submitting it.

Doing that 1) eliminates whatever bias might exist against the current grading company/holder and 2) gives the graders a better look at the coin, which might make them less cautious than when assigning a grade through the plastic of a holder.

The obvious downside in cracking the coin out is that it might have a problem which causes it to no-grade or grade considerably lower. Accordingly, I'd recommend showing it to a knowledgeable collector or dealer for an opinion, first.
