They used your name? That's scary. I just got an ebay one that, other than leaving off the salutation completely, was very similar...

    Yikes!

The new scams are getting more and more clever and these threads remind me not to do something stupid when my brain is not fully engaged. Thanks Wayne!

  • Hope non of the new folks get caught. It looks very real..........

I wish I could have posted the complete text but that means saving the "text" with is a GIF picture

  • Was addressed to me the correct way, Dear.......my name.......looked perfect.

The links...I think there were 3 I could see were fake.

Everything EXCEPT...... Dear Wayne Whatley.....had been posted as a GIF picture.....so no copy paste of the txt was possible.

It is a real clever one

No, no name, but it also didn't say Dear Ebay Member or anything else. By leaving off the salutation completely it wasn't as noticible that it was addressed incorrectly.

The content was basically "I'd like to pay for the item you listed". Seeing as I never sell it's a big clue that it was a fake. But, very sneaky. The other clue was that I had two almost identical messages in my email box. For a split second the worry that someone hijjaked (?sp) my account was there.

  • Yes, it seems to be pretty common nowadays.
I never use the emailed links for anything. I go to Ebay or Paypal directly myself to do business instead.
Using the Ebay messages for emails is safer too.

There was a phase or period in time, where they were sending out emails purporting that I had bought something obnoxious and paid for it already via Paypal. Good trick though. Don't ever fall for them.

    eBay Unpaid Item Reminder: #8768739027

    Dear eBay Member:

digitlegend has informed us that they have not yet received your payment for the following item:
    Brand New Dell E176FP 17" LCD MONITOR no 1704fp e173fp - (#8768739027)

No action is being taken against your account at this time. However, it is important to remember that when you bid on or buy an item you are agreeing to a contract between you and the seller. If the situation isn't resolved within 7 days of this reminder, you may receive an Unpaid Item strike under eBay's Unpaid Item Policy.

This is a new scam also..
    Al

  • Yeah that is a classic good one too.
Once a while back, I got curious as to what the link in the email looked like, so I clicked on it, and when the fake Ebay clone page came up, my PC's firewall alarms all got triggered by the various webbots trying to find a way into my PC.
    Dangerous stuff those links are.
