1922 Peace - What's behind the neck? Clash? VAM?

Anyone know what this is behind Liberty's neck? Is it a clash mark? I've never seen a peace clashed here before (but I do look at more morgan's than peace dollars). The reverse has some heavy clashsing and polishing to remove clash damage.

  • Yep, Clash mark and common.... You can tell where it came from using this photo one of our board members put together. A reverse clash mark if you will.... the obverse damages the reverse die and not only makes a concave mark in it which shows up on the reverse as a spiked shoulder, but it also produces a raised line that re-impacts the obverse die.....

  • Hi Rob,

Looks to me like clashing. Of course, most everything to me looks like clashing. image

John Roberts created transparent overlays, much like you are showing in the picture, that shows much the same characteristic behind the neck. If the die clash more than once, then the counter clashing results in the transference back to the die that they originated from. Thats what this looks like to me, clashing, slight rotation and then counter clashing.

    Just a theory,

    Mark
