Does this kind of auction hurt numismatics?

questionable ???

Is there a place in numismatics for legitimate sales of AT coins (call them artifical or accelerated toning)?

Should the TPGs slab "coin art"?

I've had a number of AT coins that I've sold on eBay,all with AT clearly in the title and description. Is there a place for AT coins? Yes,either in the junk box(accurately described) or in some MS-70.image

I think that it's probably a good thing for AT coin auctions to be held- then newer collectors can start to get a feel for what AT coins look like in comparison to NT coins..... plus, some can be real purdy.... image

What I don't get is this sellers listings, like this one, where he states that the coin is in an NGC slab, but the photo is taken raw. Or this one, that doesn't have any photos at all.

I'm probably just being over sensitive, huh?

As long as BOTH of the following are true:

    (1) You didn't bake the coin yourself and

    (2) The coin is very plainly and boldly described as artificial or questionable toning,

THEN I have no problem with it. Otherwise, it makes me feel unclean.

I hate when people list a coin "PCGS grade MS69*" and the coin is sitting on the floor or on a book. Mhmmmm....sure they graded it.
WTB: Eric Plunk cards, jersey (signed or unsigned), and autographs. Basically anything related to him

Positive BST: WhiteThunder (x2), Ajaan, onefasttalon, mirabela, Wizard1, cucamongacoin, mccardguy1

    Negative BST: NONE!

This is an NCS graded coin whereas NCS had no problem identifying the coin as Artifical Color. Instead this seller decided to call it "questionable" and even then, as that identifier is buried within the auction and could be easily missed.
It was also purchased off of Teletrade for about 1/3 what the asking price is.

So, yes. I think, in its own small way, this auction hurts numismatics.
