USA-Philippines: Murphy-Quezon Question

Has anyone else noticed what looks like a sylized P on the obverse of the Murphy-Quezon Peso. It shows plainly in this image between the O of OF and the T of THE.

My first thought was a die clash but it doesn't match the reverse design. Two of my 3 pesos show the entire P with flourishes the 3rd doesn't show the P design, just the flourishes. Any ideas as to what this is?

There appears to be something under the TH of COMMONWEALTH, also. I'll check mine when I get home.

  • my ms 63 does not show a "p"
  • my other thought if it were " c" it could mean made in chinaimage & if it was a" j" maybe made in japan image

Could it be the bottom of the Commonwealth shield from a clashed die?

That's my guess too, a clashed die.

    die clashing is highly likely

I think your P is the 3 from the date that was transferred from a nice hard double clash. Very cool coin. image

The P isn't the 3 although the flourishes look somewhat like the ribbon under the shield. Here are images of the entire obverse and reverse of the coin:

I took the liberty of rotating your beautiful picture to the correct position for the clash. Anyway I believe it is the correct position, unless the coin is metal orientated or something else I don't know about. I even see the back of the head of the 1st gentleman on the reverse of the coin....

If I was good at this, which I certainly am not, I could make the obverse transparent and overlay the reverse I made and we would know for sure. But at this point I am fairly certain of the clash theory.

DorkGirl: Nice rotated and mirrored version of my picture. I can accept the clashed die theory for the flourishes and indentation in the field to the right of the shield, but the "P" looks nothing like the three and it is in the wrong position. Also as I said earlier, all 3 of my pesos have the flourishes and although not mentioned, all 3 have the indentation next to the shield, but only 2 of them have the "P". Also, note that the "P" is centered and resting on the flourish and it's base is broader at that point. Not at all like the 3. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think the "P" is a clashed 3.
  • Yes, I agree. A classic die clash and an interesting one at that.

    Nice coin, by the way.
