Scarey happening

I keep all my cards in my closet in our bedroom. In the past two months we did some remodeling & put up a new ceiling fan. A few weeks back, for some strange reason the ceiling fan quit working on all the speeds. It was stuck on one speed. Well last night I took off the light kit because I had an idea what it might be. When I took it off I was surprised to see this:

This was the part I thought might have been defective (I guess its some kinda transformer). It didnt expect it to be all melted the way it is. Kinda scarey when I think about it. A new fan melting down like that and all my cards could have been gone in a second. Our house is small so I have no doubt that if it did catch on fire,we all could have gotten out but I think this happened when we were not home because the part smelled of melted plastic pretty bad and we surely would have smelled it. image

Very scary Matt. I'm glad it didn't start a fire, that would be terrible.

Hey Matt, maybe you could sell that thing on ebay. I think I saw something very similar in the New York Museum of Modern Art -

I would cross-list it in both the Art section and Baseball card/memorabilia section on ebay.

Matt - that is too scary. But don't be so sure about the above statement. If that thing caused a fire at night the usual scenario is that it causes smoke and smoldering first. That smoke is usually what gets people. They are asleep, the fumes and smoke overcome them, and then the fire finishes the job - and they never wake up. I certainly do hope you have working smoke detectors!

Mucky you are so right about the smoke.

Last year a plastic fork melted in our dishwasher during the course of a washing. I opened that door and breathed it for less than 5 seconds. For two days I was still feeling that in my lungs. If one little plastic can do that, I hope I never find out what something big can do.

Mowerman, we are happy that nothing serious happened, but this brings up a valid point about how to store cards. Graded cards take up a lot of room compared to raw, and we all like to have cards in slabs, Unless we can afford a Panic Room in our house, they can take up a lot of space.

    Thanks guys.
Mucky you are right. The only good thing about it was that if in fact it did catch on fire the fan is right above our bed. So maybe it would have dripped some molten plastic on the bed causing the blankets to go up in flames in turn cooking my feet enough that I would wake up, get the kids and wife out then go and grab my cards image

p.s. Yes we have four working detectors

I like this idea! As bxb said, put it on ebay , but as authentic babe droppings. Someone might buy it. image

    Glad all is okay Matt.

My collection literally pales in comparison to what most of you have, but I'm still in the process of having it protected. No need waiting until it's too late.

Recently just bought a new DVD recorder. I spent 25 minutes of my time to go through the house and film everything, including many of my PSA, auto, game used cards. One copy of the disc is at my parents, the other with my insurance man.

Currently making a list and itemizing my most important cards. That list goes to my insurance guy also. Everything must be listed out before it's up in flames to be covered.

Find out my homeowner policy had $2500 coverage for all collectibles in the house. I was able to add an additional $10,000 in coverage for about $70 a year. Small price to pay to replace at least my favorite cards (along with the wife's Longaberger stuff, etc.) if something were to happen. This also allows me to show off the few cards I have without fear of fire or theft. For those of you without additional protection, please check it out. Or send me your cards and I'll display them for you. image

  • Matt,
Oh brother! You sure were smart to stay on top of that one. Thank goodness that you found this hazard. That could have been an absolute disaster on many levels. "Kind of scary" doesn't do that justice. Downright horrific seems more suitable. I think I can speak on behalf of all here when I say I'm thrilled it was a near-miss! Best of luck going forward...egads!

I know what you mean. I had a truck that was shorting out when I turned on the heat. It was the middle of December and I couldn't turn on my heater beacuse smoke would start coming from the vents.

Now that you mention it, it was coming crom behind the switch for the heater. I have disgraced myself with my inaccurate story tellings. image

    Wow Matt

Glad that one came out ok!

I make it a habit to stay away from all "lectric" stuff!

My philosophy - if it aint broke, don't fix it - if it's broke, don't fix it!
