Values listed on your sets...............

Does anyone else think it would be nice to be able to see the value of the coins in your set and a total for the set. This would, of course, only be available to the owner of the set.
A button come come on the screen when viewed by the owner. Click on it a the values would be pulled from the PCGS coin prices for each coin in your set. And a total at the bottom.
I think it would be great. And as a programmer, I know it could be done very easy.
Any thoughts????

With a trusted agent working to get the PCGS price guide adjusted as members add new coins to their sets. But most would not be willing to trust putting that infor on a WEB site that might be hacked. JMO
I'm not sure I understand your other concern about hacking. Anyone can see your grade and look it up anyway. This would just put it there for you and would always be up to date, because it would be the latest from the price guide.

That info would be best kept private.
<< <i>That info would be best kept private >>
What I am thinking of is a private field only visable to the owner and the trusted agent at PCGS that would use the info to update the price guide. The owner could use it as a set inventory.
What I'm talking about is using something that is already there (price guide) to show you the value of your coins. Nothing would be changed OR stored. It would be retrieved new each time (read only) from price guide and not stored.
Determining pricing or value would be tough on some sets. Would you use auction or known sales data? OR grey sheet?

<< <i>It would use the PCGS price guide. >>
The problen I am trying to point out is that the PCGS price guide has to be corrected. It shows values of coins that are less than grading fee's on the low end. And some coins you can't touch if you bid double the price guide at auction.

NGC has a column for numismedia which I think is the retail price.
Does anyone think I should request this?

Copy this to notepad and save is as "MorganValue.iqy"
copy between the "****" but no including the "****"

When you run the above file, it will open an excel spreadsheet and load the current PCGS coin values for that series. Make sure you save the resulting spreadsheet with the same name every time (MorganValue.xls) (that is, every time you want to update your collection worth). Before I run and save a new value, I save the old one under the date as a file name so that I can trend my investment over time.
FYI: Occasionally PCGS will change the location of the start of the value chart. This is the "Selection=14" option in the above inquiry. You just need to play around with this number. Make it 12, or 13, or 15 for that matter. You can tell from what is generated on the spreadsheet what field in the web page it is reading. It is currently 14 for Morgan dollars.
If you want to track other coins like washington quarters or mercury dimes, it is a simple matter to modify the Excel inquiry.
***Next***
Create an Excel "inventory" spreadsheet with your collection
Make a column for "current PCGS value"
link the contents of this cell to the appropriate cell in the sheet generated when you run the above Excel inquiry. The easiest way to do this is to click the "=" sign in the formula bar, then click on the value spreadsheet (the one generated when you "double-click" the MorganValue.iqy file that you created above), then click the appropriate value cell for type, grade and year.
Once the spreadsheet is set up, it will not need to be setup again unless PCGS changes the format of their website.
FYI: With the way Excel works, you can add and remove coins, removing and adding rows or columns to the inventory spreadsheet, and Excel will update the formulas to reflect the new cell location so that your spreadsheet still "works" and pulls the correct value from the PCGS spreadsheet.
I tried to upload the files but the system would not allow me to upload any files - PM me and I'll email you the files you need, you can then modify them as needed.
I don't want to have to do anything. I just want what is already there displayed on the screen for the coins in my set. Not saved anywhere, so the next time it will be current if any changes where made. I know these prices in the PCGS price guide are just ballpark, but that's all I want. A coin is only worth what you can get for it.
It would just be a neat feature to be able to click on a button and see all your coins (in the set you have up) and there approx. value.

Hell, I could probably write a web site that is totally independant from PCGS that goes and grabs the values. I would set up an input screen where you put the link to your collection, click the "ok" button, and viola! out comes a page that lists your collection along with the current PCGS listed values.
hmmm....
A button come come on the screen when viewed by the owner. Click on it a the values would be pulled from the PCGS coin prices for each coin in your set. And a total at the bottom.
I think it would be great. And as a programmer, I know it could be done very easy.

You can do this on http://coins.heritagegalleries.com/ if you are registered (registration is free); it is under "My Heritage" - "My Collection" this does basicaly everything you listed above but much more.
You can list your entire collection as one set or you can break it up by coin type. Let me give you a little example of one of my sets "Gold Dollars"
When I open my gold dollar set in the top left corner it has:
Gold Dollarrs
Total for this view $X,XXX.XX (based on the "Numismedia Wholesale Ask' estimate)
Than is has a spead sheet that shows the individual coins that have been entered into the collection, the main information of the spread sheet is:
Coin Description - a description of the coin which includes year, type, grade, grading service, population in that grade and population graded higher
Coin No. - this is a referencing number assigned to the coin type by Heritage
Auction Prices Realized - This link shows you the hammer price for that coin type from all past Heritage auctions
Numismedia Wholesale Ask - Shows the coins current value based on Numismedia Wholesale
Purchase Price - Shows the amount you paid for the coin
Wantlist Demand - Shows how many Heritage members have this coin type listed in their wantlist
Add'l Data -
Below this on the right it has:
Total Purchase Price: $X,XXX.XX
Clicking on the individual coin under "Coin Description" or "Add'l Data" takes you to that coins listing page.
On this page it again shows you the coin description with year, type, grade, grading service, population in that grade and population graded higher
than there is a price guide chart that shows the current value of one grade lower, your coins grade and one grade higher. The values shown come from
Coin World (trends)
Numismedia Wholesale
Mumismedia NGC (nmn)
Munismedia PCGS (nmp)
Coin Universe
Below this are the criteria listing for the coin which include:
Grading Service
Grade
Catagory
Quantity
your ref #
CertID
Source
Date Purchased
Amount Paid
Minimum Selling Price
Than ther are two picture link windows
An area for "Coin Notes:" and an area for "Mics. Notes:"
You can fill in all the information manually or if the coin is one you purchase in a Heritage auction the coin goes into a folder called "Coins from Heritage" you can move the coin from there to your collection and all information from the purchase is automatically added to the set; including the original coin description from the Heritage auction listing.
It takes a couple of tries to get used to the site (I deleted my first couple of attempts) but after you get the hang of it; it is a very helpful and powerful resource. I have all my certified coins listed there by type I also have my uncertified mint and proof sets listed there.
Give it a try if you have some spare time.

I tried to do a link to show you what I listed above, but didn't work because each set is password protected by the person that created the set. (and no I won't give you my password )
