Gotta love Saturdays at the coin shop..........

Phone rang this morning like it always does............

Elderly voice on the other end wanted to know if I bought coins........... uhhhhhh yeah...........

Said he had a couple of coins with indians on 'em......... one was 1914......... and one was 1927.......... I said "bring 'em in and let me get a look at 'em"..........

He said that he had got them many years ago, but now he wanted to sell 'em..........

I figured they might be a couple decent Buffalos, and maybe he had a bigger stash at home and was just testing the waters........

So a couple hrs. later, but before the "6" fiasco, he shows up at the store............ Says "I called you earlier".........

So I pull out the velvet pad, and grab my glasses, and he hands me a couple envelopes........

I slide out the first coin, and it's a GORGEOUS 14-D $2 1/2 Indian !!!!!!!! The 27 was a $2 1/2 Indian also !!!!!!!!

I ended up buying both pieces, but I thought I'd share with you the pic of the envelopes they came in.........

Pay close attention to the prices written on them............

    Wow!

My thought immediately went to the gold, before it did the Buffalo nickels. I think most noncollectors know about Buffalo nickels and would have mentioned them by name.

$2.50 Indians, huh? I hope they're real. But you probably know to watch out for the ones that ain't.

PS- I was trying to decipher the old cursive script from that second envelope. Ninth Tussle? Ninth Trifle? Huh?

Then I realized it said "9th Type."

    Hold on a minute.........

    This was NO rip..............

I paid a decent amount for the coins in question.........

I got fooled by a counterfeit........

I went thru the time and expense of submitting these coins.........

At the time of the purchase, the seller was MORE than pleased with the price.........

Bad name my ass........ Just the perils of buying raw, off the street and trying to make a living at it..........

Thought I'd share some of the highs & lows with the group.........

If a collector had bought a raw coin and had it come back a 63, there'd be CHA-CHINGS all over the freakin' boards.........

If a collector had bought a counterfeit from a dealer, they'd be lynching him in public.........

As for that, they do it in all the other countries too, except only a few are allowed to play.

Look, the seller *could have* done everything LTC did, but he opted to use a coin dealer. That's where they are there for, isn't it -- they do a lot of the grunt work, they make a lot of the harder decisions, they tie up their money and they take a lot of the risks. In turn, they get a percentage. Works for me.

Having said that, a favorite dealer of mine recently sent me an unexpected check when a coin I'd sold him months and months ago came back from PCGS higher than either of us expected. That's a cool thing to do. If this guy is a regular, or LTC has his contact info, and there is room to do it, to do as my dealer did would be a praiseworthy thing. I don't think it is required.

As far as educating and instructing go, I think this is a worthwhile and provocative thread. I say this because it prompts us to reflect on what the services are that dealers provide us as buyers and as sellers, and what their work is worth. Like many of the best questions, these don't have clearcut answers -- that makes them all the more important to think about.

I would think he probably bought it assuming it would 62 in that case, meaning he thought he was buying a $450 coin when in fact he was buying a $950 coin. Meanwhile, one turned out fake. He didn't say what he bought it as, but you have to figure he's in anywhere $140 to $300 plus the grading fee. It is not like he stole something here!
