Funny 1962 Topps Wax Pack bust!!!

Ok, earlier today I got the baseball to bust open a 1962 Topps Football pack that was graded by GAI an 8. Pack looked nice. But it looked a little lose . I paid only 290.00 for it last year and thought what the hell, Ive never opened a 1962 pack so why not. Well after cutting away the GAI case I gently opened the unsealed 1962 pack. First off there was a small tear on the inside of the pack which made me worried that it had been searched. Well the first card showing was #102 Y.A. Tittle and just a small if nothing bit of wax on the front(which rubbed of with ease) Should grade a 9!!. Also the card is centered 50-50 all around and has pure black borders with out a single chip!! Looks like a MINT 9 or even a 10!! Funny thing about the pack after seeing that card first was the second card. It was a common card #135 and here is the kicker, it had a wax stain!! So now I know the pack was opened!! But then the next card is the best card of them all!! #2 Lenny Moore, Centered 50-50 all around front and back with AMAZING BLACK BORDERS!! THIS CARD IS AN EASY PSA 10!!! This card is better looking than anything I have ever seen! Ive been sending cards to PSA for about 7 years now and I just know they will grade it a 10. So nice!!! Made my day. Oh yea next 2 cards were OC with mint corners. But what the hell, I thought the point of searching packs were to take out the best cards. I wonder if this pack was opened back in the day when YA. Tittle and Moore where not all that hot. Thats my only guess.
What do yall think a PSA 10 Moore will bring? Is there a 10? If i knew how to post scans I would. If you email me Ill send you a pic.

the only thing that I see on the Moore to possibly prevent a 10 is a little flaking on the borders and is that a green spot near the word halfback?

Other than that, you have me jealous and wanting to go buy some vintage packs, but the fact you suspect the FB pack as opened concerns my faith in GAI...

yea i dont get that about the searcher. Im 100% sure it was searched!! But it still had sweet cards. I wonder what card they took out. Bc they put an extra wax stained card in the pack.

Moore might be hit with (PD) for that green spot by Halfback.
    I say all 8s.

They are grade worthy, just not like those 2. One will grade an 8 maybe a 9, one will grade a 9 OC, and the other will grade an 8 OC.
Im sending in all 5 at the same tim to have graded. So they can see those came straight from a pack.
Im also sending in the 1970 Rose and Bench, 1971-72 Jerry West pulled from a pack 50-50 MINT 9, 1952 Topps Spahn Nm-Mt fresh,2 1952 Commons Ex-Mt to Nm,1968 Ernie Banks Nm-Mt, 1972 Charlie Joiner Rc Nm-Mt, 1971 Dave cocepcion pulled from a pack MINT, and an Earl Campbell Rc Pulled from racks MINT. Im sending in all of these tomorrow and Ill post the grades when they come.

Though worth far less, I remember breaking a few boxes of 1986 Topps a while back. Obviously searched, wax stained cards in the middle of the packs, etc. Problem was, the only card of value that was missing from the bunch was Seaver and Ripken. Found a bunch of Clemens and Ryans, some out of sequence, leading me to suspect that the searchers ADDED Clemens and Ryans.

I agree with the comments about GAI. Seems to me that buying GAI slabbed packs is a guessing game - they might be unopened, but then again they might be resealed.

My guess on this pack is that someone opened up a number of wax packs, saved the wrappers, the cards were put in albums or something like that, and then at some point in time all (or most) of the cards at random were resealed, probably many years ago, in the packs without thinking about the wax stains. Otherwise for sure nobody would have left a Tittle or Lenny Moore in there.

I agree that there's not going to be a 10 there but based on your knowledge hopefully there will be a 9. This I do know...I remember opening up some 1962 football wax packs in 1962 and some cards already had chipping on them...so it wasn't any "wear" per se but just simply the way the ink didn't adhere to the edges when cut from the sheet.

If the card was indeed trimmed, I would say that it IS GAI's fault... They are not supposed to be holdering searched packs of cards.

I thought the guy who grades packs for GAI was infallible. I remember him posting on this board claiming that only he can gurantee that a pack has never been opened. what happened? sweet rose.

    What a great looking card.

I like the 70s - the simple design.

Are you gonna put it up ebay?

Here is my take, it's kinda common sense...
No authenticator, no matter what it is he authenticates, is 100 percent.

    All authenticators make mistakes.

I beleive that autograph authenticators probably arent better than 80 percent successful...

I am sure the Global pack guy misses things, as dooes card graders.

    thoughts?

Yea, I paid good money expecting an unopened pack. Even if they are 80% accurate all it takes is one time to get burned and I wont spend thousands of dollars on packs if <i feel they are searched.
  • Options
    ndleondleo Posts: 4,089 ✭✭✭✭✭
If GAI is only 80% correct in grading packs, then they should stop offering the service. An average collector could probably guess if a pack has been opened at least 60% of the time. So the added value isn't there.

For autographs, I could understand them being wrong 10% of the time due to variability.

They graded it an 8 the first time but this time a 9. What it should have been the first time, 50-50 all around with no wear.

Exactly why is sell any 9 or 10's I get, its a fools game to throw money at high end grades.

Evid of Trim then PSA 8 then PSA 9.

    Give me a break.
