Superior Auctions - put a fork in them!

I just got a phonecall that Superior Sportscard actions is going out of business, and they will not be having their upcoming March auction. Apparently they just decided this a couple of days ago, and it was a total surprise to everyone that worked there. From what I understand they'll continue their coin auctions through their sister companies, but the Superior Sports side is done for now.
The sad part is that I had to hear this through an employee that was terminated, then when I called Superior to confirm where my cards were ... I was told they plan on mailing everybody's stuff back starting next week. I asked the gal who answered the phone if they were ever going to call and inform me of this ... or just mail my stuff back with a "sorry" note. She said she really didn't know?
I can't believe how poorly this is being handled so far. They had over 800 lots ready to go, and just pulled the plug a month before the auction without telling anyone. I'm personally pis$ed because I could have sent my stuff over to Mastro if I had known last week. Now I have to play a waiting game with them, hope to get all of my stuff back (in the same condition I sent it to them), and start over fresh with a new auction house.
Sorry to vent ... but I was already making plans based upon the upcoming sale of my stuff.

Sorry for your frustration. There most have been a good reason why you originally picked Superior over Mastro. You are probably better off, the last Superior auction was pretty bad.
Sad that a company with such excellent leaders in the past(Greg Bussineau, Chris Porter) has to end like this.
Meanwhile, Memory Lane, Mile High and Bill Goodwin seem to be aggressively filling the void.
Capitalism is good.
Good luck Mike in getting your $ soon.

I'm mostly kicking myself because I was waiting on one last card to upgrade the second set (that was supposed to go into Mastro's current auction) and when it didn't arrive in time I decided to hold off selling the second set of Bowmans until Mastro's next auction.
So now I guess l'm all dressed up with no place to go!
Mike
PS - I asked this question about six months ago, but it seems to have changed a little recently ... Which 2 auction houses do you think are pulling the biggest money for high grade vintage (football card) sets?
Anyhow, I had gone with Superior in the past mainly because of their "National" auctions but the last one didn't go so good.
Been going with Mile High here and there, and they will be getting my stuff from now on.
I'd say Mile High and Mastro. Good luck Mike -
Don't let it get to you too much

Jeremy, You obviously never saw the hole I put in my wall ... when you beat me that 2nd time around in fantasy Football!
Actually, I'm more "bummed out" than mad at this point. I was excited to see how a couple of my items would do, and I REALLY liked the idea of one of the larger auction houses offering a few smaller lots. I've always hated those 5 year set runs and big mixed wax lots that the big houses seem to always run. I can't begin to count the number of times I've had to pass on certain Mastro items just because they were grouped into some kind of $10,000 super lot. I understand the reason they do it ... I guess I'd just like to be able to play on the playground (with the big kids) every now and then!
Of course I'm not real impressed with the way they've handled this whole thing so far, and I'll be holding my breath until I get my stuff back. But maybe it was for the best if their auctions were getting worse. I hadn't paid much attention to their last auction ... and I was under the impression they were still in the top 3 or 4 for realized prices.
I've heard good things about Mile High, so maybe I'll go with them and Mastro next time around.
Oh well, another day, another dollar .... or another .85¢ once you subtract the buyers fee.
Mike
Imagine my shock when I read your post. I had over $5000 in cards consigned to the Superior Auction. I immeadiately called Mr. Smith and it seems he is out of work also. Superior wanted to go the coin route only. With all of that stuff already in their safe I cannot believe they yanked the plug.
He hooked me up with Mile High and they are going to pay for my cards to be shipped there when I get them back (supposed to be shipped on Tuesday 2/21). There are several good companies out there. It will just be a couple of months before I see any $$$.
I got the same story that you got from the lady answering the phone. No sense going off on her, but it was handled horrendously. There last auction did suck, but the one before that was nice and this auction had an ad in the March 2006 SMR. I know catalogs cost money, but they are out a lot of money for nothing.
Hey shouldabeena10 - our trailer court is having a yard sale this weekend.
I can put your round stuff in the one dollar bin for you if you want ... only fee from me would be one beer per coaster sold ...
"How about a little fire Scarecrow ?"
Sorry to hear you're caught up in all the Superior mess. I also felt sorry for the woman who answered the phone ... you could tell she'd been abused all day, so I cut her a little slack too. Hopefully the card returning will go smoothly and we'll all do well in different auctions.
Jeremy,
Actually, I lied about the hole in my wall. I named it Uncle Art ... if that tells you anything!
Hey Lillo,
What do you think will show up in my mailbox first; my auction cards back from Superior .... or those freak'n Tallboys you were supposed to send me 2 months ago?!?!? Capitalism at it's finest... huh? It's no wonder Hootie won't return your calls!
Wolf,
It's nice to hear the trailer parks still rocking! I bet the discs would sell well along side all of your handmade potholders, ceramic kittens, and velvet paint-by-numbers pictures. I still have that leatherette key chain you made for me last year.
Mike
Oh, that is why I never received a return call from them. I called them about submitting a few items and was told they would get back to me. Well now I know the answer.
