Tips On Spoting Real or Counterfeit Pete Rose RC

Does anybody have any tips on looking at a Rose rookie and being able to tell whether or not it is real or not? I will possibly be buying a collection in person on Saturday. In the collection is a bunch of vintage star singles including a Rose rookie. It is not graded, but the guy doesn't have any graded cards. He may not even know much about grading. He said on the phone that he got the Rose rookie for Christmas when he was a boy. He said he was 35, so I figured he got it in the 80's.

Any tips would be appreciated - except the tip that says ONLY BUY A GRADED ONE! I know that, but I thought if someone could tell me how to spot a fake in person, I might risk it. If I can't tell, I will tell him to keep the Rose.
