Does anyone put OC cards in their registry set?

DarinDarin Posts: 7,038 ✭✭✭✭✭
I just put two 9OC cards in my 75 topps baseball set. Didn't realize they'd slap them down two grades on grade point average. I'm keeping them in though because they're great looking cards, just off top to bottom a little. If they were off side to side, I wouldn't put them in because that's way more obvious and looks a lot worse. Anyone else have qualifier cards in your set?

(found this on the set reg. info page)
Additionally, the following point deductions are taken for Qualifiers. For example, if your card or ticket is graded PSA 9Q, the grade calculation in the Registry will be 7.

9Q = -2
8Q = -2
7Q = -2
6Q = -2
5Q = -2
4Q = -2
3Q = -1
2Q = -1
1Q = no deduction

    I also have 2 PSA 9 OC cards in my 65 set. Like you said they are great looking cards.

    i will only use 9OC nothing lower though.

    IMO the 9OC is an undervalued card, especially those that still retain nice eye appeal.

    Good for you.
  • Centering is not a big issue with me. I have quite a few cards with qualifiers in my Registry sets. An example would be #119 in my Uncle Sam Home Defense set a PSA6MC - The only copy of this card graded so far. Heck I have PSA1's that are Pop 1/1 with none higher - My Uncle Sam No. 1 card, for example.

    I like to keep them in my registry. I use the registry as a checklist. It is much easier to look through ebay listings in one window with my set registry in the other and know what I have.

    Just wondering...

    Does this mean if you asked for no qualifier would you receive a 7 instead of a 9 OC?

    Not necessarily. You could receive anywhere from a PSA 8 down to a PSA 1. You can get an OC for a card that's just a hair worse than the required centering for a PSA 9 but would still fit with the standards for a PSA 8. If the card were centered 99/1, and you asked for no qualifiers, it would fall MUCH further.

    An aside. PSA has the following write-up for a PSA 1. The last sentence makes me wonder what happens if the centering isn't 90/10 or better on the front and back?!?!? image

    PR-FR 1: Poor to Fair.

    Poor to Fair A PSA PR-FR 1 card's corners will show extreme wear, possibly affecting framing of picture. Surface of card will show advanced stages of wear, including scuffing, scratching, pitting, chipping and staining. Picture will possibly be quite out-of-register and borders may have become brown and dirty. May have one or more heavy creases. A Poor card may be missing one or more small pieces, have major creasing and extreme discoloration or dirtiness throughout. Card may show noticeable warping. Centering must be 90/10 or better on the front and back.

    Some sets are also notorious for off center cards...you sometimes have to use a 9 OC as a placeholder until you can get a nicer looking card. I know that right now in the 1984 Donruss set the Alan Ashby highest graded card is a 9 OC...so do you list that in your set or place a PSA 8.....it's a decision I had to make...in this case I listed the 8 but still have the other card. Also I'm working on a 1970 Topps football set that I have a number of 9 OC cards listed...
  • I may be wrong but as stated before when you ask for a card to be graded without the qualifier (which in most cases is strictly a matter of measuring the centering accurately) you get into that very subjective "eye Appeal" territory, where the graders opinion can vary greatly based on the cards presentation as they see it.
