My girlfriend gave me coins for Valentines Day

Today my lady gave me a Lesotho 10 Maloti proof (extremely nice DCAM) and an Egypt One Pound (great luster, solid UNC) for my 1979 silver collection. This girl is way more thoughtful than I deserve!

I should have seen this coming. Since she came to the PAN show with me in October (I had to sell her on that idea) and we spent a good hour rifling through darkside coins together she's been more and more interested in my collection. She told me she spent some time reading my copy of Krause a few weeks ago to get some ideas!

To this point I had always thought she was humoring me when she didn't fall asleep while I was talking about coins. As it turns out, she says she actually enjoys some aspects of this hobby. I'm thinking that if I play my cards right I can get her hooked - she's a sucker for anything with a horse on it.

Along those lines, anybody happen to know of some good designs featuring horses (preferably a bit less violent than the Sovreign)? Inexpensive coins would be best at this point as my plan may not work (then again, there's really no downside because I'll get to keep the coins).

  • You lucky Son of a gun !!

I gave my wife a present of a coin last year as a 'just because' present', no occasion really. She wasn't impressed.

Anyway - yesterday I gave her a 2 Shilling ZAR coin and said that I had been searching months for it, especially for her. Ha ha ha - she wasn't sure if I was serious or not ( I wasn't - the coin was in my collection already AND it wasn't her present ).

We had her uncle over for dinner last night and I showed him some coins and told him about the gold Zars & Eliasbergs - the wife said that I should melt them down and make a big piece of jewellery out of it for her ! image

In other words there's NO chance the Mrs will become interested in coins.

  • Brunswick-Wolfenbuttel (German state) has a nice set of coins with horses on them. So does Hannover (another German state). Canada has a royal mounted police officer on a 1973 dollar. (I think it was '73). I also seem to recall an Irish coin with a steed on it. These are the ones that come to mind right now, I am sure there are many, many more. I have no doubt others will point out many more to you. Horses must be very common on coins from many different countries!

Hmmmm.........perhaps a safe is a good idea--one she doesn't have a key to!! image And as you mentioned, she might not take an interest in coins, but obviously she's able to recognize gold in any shape!!

PS: Dexter, congrats on the keeper of a lady!

  • LOL jester - gold coins are now safe at the bank. I only have a few cheap coins here.

We actually do have a safe in the house and I guard the key !!

As you have read my Mrs is a keeper too.........she can sniff out gold at over a hundred metres. image

Take a look at the Bosnia-Herzegovina suverena series. An annual issue with a different horse each year, ran for 5 years or so back in the late 90's. I think danglen from here sells them on eBay & in his web-store. They are on my "to get" list, but are a low priority for right now.

  • Thanks for the excellent ideas folks. Hopefully I can have a few choice coins for her by the time her birthday rolls around in May.

Here's an example of a one of the horse themed series referred to above, the German State of Hannover. This coin is about the size of a U.S. nickel. I picked this up at the local coin show last November. They're not overly expensive. I think this one was $25-30.
