Is it better to ship coins by FEDEX or UPS ?

Is it better to ship coins by FEDEX or UPS with insurance to a residence? Who cost more? USPS is not an option because of a mailman that sign for packages himself.

Unless you have business insurance, FedEx & UPS ar NOT options as they do note insure coin & currency shipments. USPS blue label insured or registered/insured is the way for most proivate individuals. If you still insist on FedEx or UPS, it is just a matter of rates that you can find on their respective sites.

I look on the UPS site and they do provide insurance for packages, do they say that they do not insure coins and currency but will insurance everything else?

  • I use USPS to ship my coins out. Priority on the cheaper ones and registered for the more expensive.... insurance on all.

Can you expand on that? I've shipped thousands of packages through the postal service and haven't encountered this as an issue.

    Baffled also. Please explain.

    FEDEX and UPS both suck.

Someone that I sold something to says that his mailman just signs for the packages and leaves the package in his mail box. I have never encountered that before either but that was what he say.

I do sometimes get a BLUE insured package left in my P.O. box that is suppose to be sign for, so I guess it happens.

I guess that was what my buyer did, but the problem is that the turkey is still on the job and he now has an angry turkey.image

FedEx is better since they work with third party insurance. UPS will not cooperate with third party insurance.

Does FEDEX sell third party insurance at their retail locations?

    Thanks.

No. It is up to you to find a third party who will insure your coins for shipping and transit. FedEx house insurance will not insure coins or monetary items (says on their disclaimer).

How about if I don't insure the coins but sells the coin slab for $1000.00 and insure that.image

They're not stupid, and they won't buy it. The safest way to ship $1000 (the only way I will) is by registered mail. If the carrier signs for it and leaves the package in the mailbox, especially with a complaint already lodged, his job could be in serious jeopardy. I wouldn't worry about a registered package getting lost.

As an insight, I have been shipping coins via FedEx for almost six years, and I have never had a single package lost although several have been delayed. This is out of a total of several thousand shipments.

Insuring the slab and not the coin wouldn't work either because the slab is attached to a cash item.

Registered mail is reliable, but extremely slow.

By the way, even if a postal worker loses his job it isn't much consolation for you since all they got was terminated and you're still missing your merchandise. With very few exceptions, the terminated postal worker is not financially liable for any items they lose.

Some general infor on Registered mail. If the carrier does not get the proper signature for the package it is not just his job. He is subject to Federal prosecution.
Not only is Registed used for high value items. The U.S. Goverment and Miltary classied material up to Secert is sent that way.
When I was a loadmaster in the Air Force we carried registered mail quit often. It was allways hand to hand signed for. And we where required by law to keep our records for seven years.

I'd go with FedEx or USPS. I will never ship or buy anything that is shipped by UPS. If you value what is in the package stay far, far away from them.

This is probably because your customers got their item back from the neighbor after it was dropped there instead of taken back to the depot when the customer, yours, was not home.

Yes this did happen to me with a package worth about 2 grand from Heritage. When I asked FedEx, after finding out what had happened, they said it was standard practice to do what they had done. Right then FedEx went with UPS in the "You Suck" catagory.

I have never had this happen with the Postal Service. NEVER !!

  • I'll second the note on the 'fragile' and UPS - sent a decanter and glass set to my brother clearly marked 'FRAGILE' on all sides of the package - the UPS guy dumped it over my brother's 8 ft fence onto the patio because my brother was not home to get the package... took freakin' forever to get the insurance claim settled with them as well.

I use USPS registered for expensive packages and first class for all others.

I use USPS strictly. If, however, I HAD to use one of the others, it would be FedEx. I wouldn't use UPS if my very life depended on it.

  • Ups is garbage...they leave stuff all the time thats supposed to be signed for...FedEx has been hassle free and USPS is on target 99% of the time. I have heard of mailmen that will sign for, or leave the packages, but they are certainly risking their jobs..

A good mailman will do this if his customer trusts him and asks him to do so.

I was going to start an anti-FedEx thread tonight because I've had increasing problems with them (since approximately November), both as a sender and as a recipient. Packages are taking too long to be delivered, or they aren't delivered in the time frame specified but at the "convenience" of the carrier.

It wasn't always like this; FedEx used to be considerate to everybody. Now they only seem to care if the sender holds their feet to the fire. Some senders just aren't set up to do this; FedEx screws up delivery times windows on U.S. Mint shipments all the time, apparently confident that even if they get caught, nothing will happen to them

On the other hand, I am a discriminating customer: FedEx lost 60% of their expected revenue from me these past three months because they couldn't deliver properly! It is up to customers like me to demonstrate that excessive concern for fuel costs by this carrier is a false economy.

Today, my office opened an account with DHL. They delivered boxes, tubes, and shipping labels this afternoon, so we'll be ready to ship tomorrow. (FedEx messed up pre-printed airbills three times in the past three weeks!)

I have a mailman and 2 substitutes when he is gone

he will usually come to the door for a signature ( I work nights )

but - last week I got a slip in my box and went to the PO to pick up a package that was worth $50
and the same day I made the trek to the PO I also received a $700 coin in my box with no signature

I would just ship it USPS insured and if the buyer does not get it for whatever reason, file an insurance claim

My post office does not require an ID to pick up a registered package. I don't know why. If they put the yellow card in the wrong box, someone else would easily get my package.

That said, Fedex has turned into another UPS. They are paid to see that your package is delivered. They are not paid to see that you get it.

My recent experiences with Registered have had quick delivery ( less than a week from back east.)
